What to Do First

When a death occurs in your family, notify Downing & Lahey Mortuaries by calling our nearest funeral home.

You will likely face a wave of emotions and uncertainty when a death occurs. Please know that you are not alone. Our caring staff is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to offer guidance, assist with arrangements, and walk with you every step of the way.

Below are the immediate steps to take, based on where the passing occurs:

If the death occurs at home:

  • If your loved one is under hospice care, please contact the hospice nurse.

  • If your loved one is not under hospice care, call 911. A police officer will respond.

Please ask the nurse or officer to contact either of our locations. When you call us, we may ask:

  • Your name and phone number

  • The name of your loved one

  • The address and directions to the home

Our staff will come to the location and gently bring your loved one into our care. We will then schedule a convenient time for you to meet with one of our funeral directors.

If the death involves the medical examiner: You will need to authorize the medical examiner to release your loved one into our care. We will assist with the necessary documentation and arrange a time to meet with you.

If the passing occurs in a hospital, hospice, or nursing facility: Ask the attending nurse or physician to contact us. Once the pronouncement of death is made, our staff will respond promptly. We will coordinate with you to schedule an appointment with a funeral director.

If the death occurs out of the area: Please contact us before reaching out to an out-of-town funeral home. We can help guide the process, often saving time and reducing unnecessary expenses.

We are here for you with compassion, clarity, and care. Please call Downing & Lahey Mortuaries any time for immediate support.
