Understanding Social Security Death Benefits After a Loss
When a loved one passes away, understanding social security death benefits can help families manage the financial transition. At Downing & Lahey Mortuaries & Crematory in Wichita, KS, we assist families in notifying the Social Security Administration and understanding the benefits available to surviving spouses, dependents, and other eligible individuals.
Types of Social Security Death Benefits
The Social Security Administration provides a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255, payable to an eligible surviving spouse or dependent child. In addition, surviving spouses age 60 or older (50 if disabled) may be eligible for survivor benefits based on the deceased’s earnings record. Dependent children under age 18 (or up to 19 if still in high school) may also qualify for monthly benefits. Our team can explain the general eligibility requirements and help you prepare for your meeting with the Social Security office.
Notifying Social Security
As part of our services, Downing & Lahey notifies the Social Security Administration of the death on behalf of the family. This is an important step that must be taken promptly. We handle this notification as part of our standard care, so you can focus on your family during this difficult time.
