Doug Hays, 74, retired Sedgwick County Sheriffs Sergeant, joined his Lord on August 1, 2012, following complications from open-heart surgery. Doug was born in Harper, Kansas on August 11, 1937, and was the youngest child of Wallace and Margaret (McAulay) Hays. Doug was a lifelong law enforcement officer. His career began in New York in the U.S. Army Military Police during the cold war and Korean War. He ended his MP career guarding top secret nuclear bases at Seneca Ordnance Depot, Romulus, NY. After the Army, Doug returned to Kansas where he farmed and continued his law enforcement career. He served in the Harper Police Department and the Kingman County Sheriffs Department. In 1973, Doug moved to Wichita where he served in the Sedgwick County Marshalls Office and the Sheriffs Department, ultimately rising to the rank of Sergeant before retiring in 1996. Doug spent his retirement years enjoying his various hobbies. Always an avid fisherman, he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren the art of fishing. He had a small farm on the outskirts of west Wichita where he raised chickens and a few head of cattle. He also turned hobby to business refinishing furniture. In the later years of his life, he became enthralled with the restoration of antique John Deere tractors. Doug was active in his church serving as an officer in the Mens Group and on the board of the endowment fund and was a faithful man of worship and love for God. Doug will be remembered as a beloved and loving husband, good friend to many, and a doting grandpa. Doug is survived by his wife, Sheila; sister, Lee Rouser of Pensacola, FL, and his extended family: J.D. and Teresa Hays of Anthony, granddaughter, Grace, and great-granddaughter, Misty Raine; Jim Carrie Hays of Wellington, grandson, Kyle and Alyssa Hays of Wellington, great-grandchildren, Ellie and Jeff, granddaughter, Jessica Hays of Wellington; Jeff and Tina Hays of Wellington, grandsons, Justin and Landon; Jerrod and Nancy Hays of Wellington, grandsons, Anthony and Jacob; six nieces and nephews, and families and “unofficial” children and grandchildren too numerous to list. Memorial Service, 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 8, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. A Graveside Service will follow at 2:30 p.m., Burchfield Cemetery, Anthony, KS.
