Marie Louise Howard

Howard, Marie Louise, 91, a former nurse, died peacefully Tuesday, January 11, 2005, following a long illness. She had lived for almost 20 years in the Riverside neighborhood overlooking the Little Arkansas River. She was born in Dresden, Germany, on August 13, 1913. She moved to America following World War II. She became a nurse during the war and continued nursing for awhile after coming to America. Marie Louise married James Henri Howard on September 5, 1948, and became a U.S. citizen June 18, 1952. They adopted two Native American children, one of whom, Lance, predeceased her. Dr. James Howard was a professor of anthropology at Oklahoma State University and authored numerous books on the culture of the Native American tribes of the Great Plains. He died on October 1, 1981. Not long afterward, Marie Louise moved from Stillwater, OK., to Wichita. Previously, she had lived in North Dakota and Nebraska. Survivors include her brother, Walter Heinze, and his wife, Martina, both of New Jersey. No local services are planned.
