Jo Clarice Burrow Carnes

Carnes, Jo Clarice Burrow, “It is time to gather in, to harvest from every sweet hour”. Jo passed away Monday, January 11, 2010. She was born in Gage, OK to Charles and Zettie Lee Burrow, December 18, 1930. Jo lived in Wichita since 1971, with her husband, Lt. Colonel Thomas Carnes who retired from the U. S. Army that same year. They were married December 24, 1952 in Oklahoma City shortly after Tom received his commission and they were posted to Ft. Campbell, KY. In 1954 she joined Tom in Camp Wood, Japan with their new son, William. 1955 brought her to Ft. Bragg, NC where she was blessed with their first daughter, Carolyn. In 1957 while stationed back at Ft. Campbell, she had their second son, George, shortly after she fell ill with polio. At this point her mother-in-law, the late Dorothy Carnes took over the home making duties and accompanied the family to Dachau, Germany. While there, Jo gave birth to her second daughter, Virginia, at the army hospital in Munich. After the 3 year tour in Germany, assignments included Ft. Sill, OK, Ft. Benning, GA, 3 more years in Germany, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and finally Ft. Bragg, NC until 1971. the retirement move to Wichita was the last of 24 family moves. The next years found her working as a bookkeeper, Welcome-Wagon hostess, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and for years, the hostess of the Wednesday night full family fried chicken dinner. In 1985, she spent 8 months in Coventry, England with Tom while on business for Boeing, after that they returned to England three times and crisscrossed the U.S. from border to border and coast to coast. She was preceded in death by her mother, Zettie Lee, father, Charles, brother, Charles and grandson, Jon Carnes. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Carnes of Wichita, her sons and daughters: William and his wife, Ann of Ashburn, VA, Carolyn Carnes Stevens and her husband, Richard of Wichita, George Carnes of Peck, KS and Virginia Carnes of Great Falls, MT. She is survived by sisters: Geraldine Burrow LeFever of Wichita and May Katherine (Kay) Burrow Jones of Dallas, TX. Also surviving are grandchildren, Robert Stevens of Wichita, Thomas W. Carnes and Joni Elizabeth Carnes of Ashburn, VA; great-granddaughter, Jaeden Marie Stevens of Wichita. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, January 14 and service 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 15, both at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita. A memorial has been established with the Alzheimers Association, 347 Laura, Wichita, KS, 67210. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, January 14 and service 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 15, both at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita.
