73, retired United States Army Captain and USPS Letter Carrier, passed away, Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Rosary, 7 p.m., Monday, April 30; Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 1, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Preceded in death by parents, Carl and Sue Meitner; sister, Carla Meeds. Survivors: wife, Diane; sons, Eric (Elizabeth) Meitner of Wichita, Brian Compton of Olathe, Eric (Jennifer) Compton of Gardner, Todd (Aimee) Burdick of Branson; sister, Nikki (Walt) Nelson of Wichita; grandchildren, Aubrae (Christopher) Winkler, Jordan Meitner, Schuyler (Jerod) Weninger, Jared Harrison, Tyler Harrison, Alyssa Alena, Jeffery Alena; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Boston and Ezra.
Greg retired from the United States Army as Captain and returned later to serve as Master Sergeant in the United States Army Reserves. During his service, he received many awards. Among his decorations were the following:

"For heroism involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: First Lieutenant Meitner distinguished himself by valorous actions on 29 May 1969 while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company A., 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry, on a sweeping operation near Fire Support Base Moore. In leading an assault on enemy positions, Lieutenant Meitner, with complete disregard for his personal safety, maneuvered across 150 meters of open terrain where to took up exposed position from which to return fire and direct his men First Lieutenant Meitners personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army." quoted from Gregs Award for the Bronze Star.
After graduating from WSU with a bachelors in accounting, he worked as Project Cost Accountant at Doolittle and Office Manager for Ritchie Construction.
He also proudly served and retired as a USPS Letter Carrier. After retirement he was an instructor for WATC and worked on some graduate level studies.
Greg & Diane were married for almost 35 years, and were avid Shocker boosters who regularly attended any Shockers event they could (Go Shockers!!). They also enjoyed travelling together. Just a few places their adventures took them were the Mediterranean, Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands and St. Petersburg Russia.
Greg loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family, as well as helping others get involved by being one of the original instructors for Kansas Hunter Safety. Greg also enjoyed overseeing the farmers production as a suitcase farmer.
One of Gregs most beloved occupations was Grandpa and Great Grandpa. The Grandkids always brought a smile to
Rest Gregory, until you hear at dawn, the low, clear reveille of God.
