Jordan was a valued friend and advisor. I enjoyed many years of admiring a truly remarkable man. Over the years, Jordan made a point to honor the passing of my father and mother with conversations regarding his respect and admiration of both of them. He really made me even more proud of them. I have one special story about Jordan that happened 35 years ago. I will always remember my first orientation to the ‘Jordan’ way of doing things. His daughter, Missy was a dear friend in high school. She had had a study boyfriend for years, but they broke up in our senior year and I was quick to ask her out on a date. It was a Saturday night and Missy made it clear that she HAD to be home by 11:30. Well we rolled in her driveway at 11:45 and she was beside herself. I thought she was just kidding me. I had no more than shut off the car than the porch lights started blinking on and offmy first clue that she WASNT KIDDING! As we walked up to the door, it opened and there stood Jordan. He told me in a friendly, but firm manner that ’11:30 meant 11:30′ and shut the door. I was one 17 year old that had been converted to the ‘Jordan religion’!
I have fond memories of working with Jordan at the Fourth National Bank. He ask me why he should hire me when I would probably get married in two years – I responded that he should take the chance. He did and I married two years later and resigned. Even so, he was fiercely loyal and always supportive. A BIG man and one that will be missed. Shirley you have my prayers for comfort during this trying time. Arlene Rains Graber
Shirley and family, Please accept my sympathy. As a fellow Sabethan, I was proud to say that I knew Jordan and his family. I spoke to him on the phone several times in the past year, telling him of Sabetha items I’d located, but was unable to procure any for him. I wanted to send a card, but your address is not listed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Linda (Close) Wood
Dear Shirley: Your loss is very great. Jordan was top notch in every way and the most charming man I’ve ever known. He had a million friends. All my sympathy to you and your family. Charlie Crawford
Shirley Shirley, We were all so sorry to hear about Jordan. I contacted Mary and her family. The last time we all saw him was at my parents’ funerals. My best to you and your family, and when Mary comes to visit, we will be taking a trip to ElDorado and will call you.
I submitted a tribute today and just now found a misspelled word. Please correct! About half way through the paragraph: sentence that starts ‘She had had a study boyfriend…’please correct study to steady
I was Jim Martin’s secretary during the years Jordan was Chairman of the KUEA Executive Committee. He was a most gracious and generous man. Whenever my husband and I visited Wichita, he was forthcoming with restaurant suggestions and, on one occasion, even gave me a tour of the Bank IV offices. It was a pleasure to serve during Jordan’s tenure with KUEA. I lost my husband to cancer just two years ago. I hope you will soon remember the good times more than the recent trials. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Jordan was the most influential and admired person I have ever known. I owe my financial independence to Jordan. Like many of the BANK IV employees, he changed my lifestyle and I will forever be indebted to him. He was leader and a friend to all of us. I will never forget him. He was a giant.
We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Jordan. We will continue to benefit rom all that he has done to make our community better. We will benefit from his restless drive to innovate and to perfect. Jordan’s death represents a terrible loss. As strange as it may seem at this moment, however, we are left with again, a profit, from his life, so rich, creative and generous.
Shirley & Craig and Families – What a great loss, but what a great life! He will be missed by so many. We didn’t see you often but always admired you both. Many, many memories from the growing up days in Sabetha. The Roberts/Haines connection was always very strong. What good times our parents had together. Maybe they’re up there playing bridge or having a cocktail party. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
‘Squirlley…what a wonderful opportunity it hs been for me to know Jordan. Our friendship goes back to 1948, when I knew you from dating a fellow Fraternity Brother at 1425 Tennessee. My thoughts & prayers & best wishes go to you.
Mrs. Haines – My name is Marci Koch Williams – my brother’s name is David Koch. We were good friends with Missy during the late 60’s thru Sing-Out Kansas. We hung around with Missy, Nancy Hougland, Karen Olander, Sally Hartwell, Jane Shook, Bill Niles, Alan Coe, Larry Cracraft, Ward Simpson, etc. I remember you and Mr. Haines so-o fondly – you were always so-o warm and welcoming to all of us and we enjoyed being in your lovely, lovely home many times. I also remember so-o fondly the cute stories Missy would tell about ‘Jordan’ and ‘Shirley’ which made both of you even more special to us. I offer my warmest sympathies for Mr. Haines passing and again at losing Missy so-o young. I’m sure they are together again and all is a little bit brighter in heaven although a little darker here on earth. Thank you for being such a wonderful, memorable part of my young life. David & I are still very close, both happily married. I just retired from Bombardier Learjet (after 33 years as a corporate tax accountant for them) and David teaches English at Southeast High School. Warmest thoughts, Marci Williams
DEAR SHIRLEY AND CRAIG, I WAS SADDENED TO LEARN UPON MY RETURN TO WICHITA YESTERDAY OF JORDAN’S DEATH. HE WAS ALWAYS GOOD AND SPECIAL TO ME. I RREMEMBER RETURNING FROM THE AIR FORCE IN 1968 AND HIS VISITING WITH ME AND SHARING HIS ADVICE ABOUT A BUSINESS CAREER. I WILL REMEMBER WITH FONDNESS THE TIMES WE SHARRED. ON ONE OCCASION HE EVEN PLAYED A ROUND OF GOLF WITH ME WITHOUT COMPLAINING ABOUT MY POOR GAME! I AM SURE HE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HE WAS GETTING INTO WHEN HE EXTENDED TO ME THE INVITATION. JORDAN WAS DEFINITELY A GOOD SPORT! I WILL BE ON A PLANE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, BUT WILL BE WITH YOU IN SPIRIT. YOU ARE IN DARLENE AND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. RIC
Jordan was the most likeable and fun ‘banker type’ it has been my privilege and pleasure to know. We had some wonderful times. May the fairways be wide, the greens smooth, the holes large and more good companions to play with. Sympathy to family, he was a good one!!
