Sherwin Snyder
August 21, 2015
Sherwin Snyder, 79, retired pharmacist who diligently filled thousands of Wichitas prescriptions in his forty-six year career, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, August 21, 2015. He had recently moved to Tucson, AZ to be closer to his children and spend his last days seeing them as much as possible, a gift for both them and him. His pharmacy career began in Wichita at Dockum Drug in 1957 a time when a pharmacist would make as many ice cream sodas for customers as they would fill prescriptions. He always missed those “old days” and retired in 2003 from Leekers Pharmacy in Valley Center saying goodbye to dear colleagues but having had his fill of the modern pharmacy world that sells as many prescriptions in a day as he used to in a month. “IPBO” as he used to jokingly call it - “Intense Pharmacy Burn Out.” The long-closed TGY pharmacy on 47th St. South and Broadway is where he worked most of his years and had so many great memories with colleagues and customers in the 1970s and 80s Abba, America, the Eagles and Steely Dan playing in the background. He was born in Oklahoma City in 1936 moved to Wichita in 1953. He graduated from East High School in May 1954 and attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating at the top of his class in May 1959 with a B.S. degree in pharmacy. Oklahoma City always had a special place in Sherwins heart - the Boomer Theater where he took his college sweetheart to movies for twenty-five cents (agonizing over when during the movie he should try to hold her hand), the simplicity of life back then, friends, and of course Sooners football. He was preceded in death by his dad, Louis, in 1980, his mother, Ida, in 1994. He is survived by son, Daniel Snyder; twin daughters, Kimberly Laura Snyder; brother Joseph Snyder; sister-in-law, Alise Snyder; 2 nieces, Michelle Snyder Evie Laug; great-niece, Eden Laug, and great-nephew Tyler Laug, all of the Maryland/DC area. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Hebrew Congregation Cemetery. Memorials have been established with Mid-Kansas Jewish Federation, 400 N Woodlawn, Wichita, KS 67208 and The American Heart Association,3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
