Louis Kelsey Bodecker

Louis Kelsey Bodecker, 95, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015. Visitation will be at 9:00 A.M., with funeral to follow at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday August 25, 2015 at College Hill United Methodist Church. Kelsey was born on April 7, 1920, to parents Louis H. Laura A. Bodecker in Whitewater, KS. Preceding him in death, together with his parents, were his sister, Virgilene Carp, wife, Melba J. Bodecker. Kelsey graduated from Whitewater High School in 1938, the same year his father died. Kelsey started his college education at the then Wichita University until 1942 when he was drafted in WWII. After receiving his commission as Captain, he married Melba Jean Pittenger on December 7, 1944. In April 1946, Kelsey accepted a position teaching music in Scott City, KS, where they lived for 9 years. In 1955, they returned to Wichita where their daughter Barbara was born, he became the vocal music coordinator for the Wichita Public Schools. He continued his education during this time at Northwestern University with a Masters Degree, an Ed.D. Degree from University of Northern Colorado. In 1979, Kelsey was elected Chairman of the Wichita Arts Council, was involved in many other music organizations. He retired in 1984. After retirement, Melba Kelsey enjoyed world travels their time together. Melba Kelsey were especially proud on September 9, 1987 when their one only grandchild Drew was born. Many extensive family trips were enjoyed together as a family. A consummate moment for Kelsey was to witness Drews marriage, his becoming a Doctor of Medicine last May. Kelsey spent his last 3 years residing at Larksfield Place Assisted Living. He was an active member of College Hill United Methodist Church for over 55 years where, from 1956 - 1973 he was director of music. His daughter son-in-law Barbara Marvin Cox, grandchild Drew Cox his wife Alyx, many cousins survive Kelsey. A memorial has been established with College Hill United Methodist Church, 2930 E. 1st. Street N., Wichita, KS, 67214. The family would like to remember thank all of the wonderful caregivers at Larksfield who made his life special. He will forever be remembered for his always positive attitude, smiling face, gift to us all - his music! Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
