Margaret Ash

May 22, 1917 ~ January 27, 2015
Ash, Margaret B., 97, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was born in Spearville, KS on May 22, 1917 to Deborah and John Jones. The family moved to Dodge City and later to Wichita in 1934, where Margaret attended East High. Upon graduation, she studied at WSU, where she taught PE to help pay tuition. Margaret met and married Milton Ash and soon started a family in 1949 with the birth of their daughter, Lucinda. Both Margaret and Milton were pilots. Margaret would fly out to oil rigs with her baby aboard to join Milton for lunch. The baby also accompanied her while fulfilling her license flight hours. Milton died in 1951, leaving Margaret widowed with a two year old daughter. With her indomitable spirit, Margaret became the first keypunch operator at Boeing, packed parachutes and painted logos on planes. She also ferried Luscombe airplanes all over the United States. Margaret was an esteemed member of Feminairs. In 1951, Margaret purchased an engraving machine and taught herself to engrave, opening her firm in her garage she had transformed to a duplex on Kellogg where she used one side for the business and the other for her residence. Until recently, she continued her business, Ashcraft Awards with her daughter. Margaret was an avid, self-taught golfer that began on the sand greens of Echo Hills over 65 years ago. Soon, Margaret was competing in City and State competitions and playing Team Play for many years at the various clubs she belonged to. For the past sixteen years, Margaret was an honoree of the Flint Hills National Gertrude Devlin Ladies Invitational. She achieved a total of four holes-in-one. Margaret was an inspiration to fellow golfers, admiring her fortitude and enthusiasm for the game. Rain or shine, she was out on the course most days quietly playing her round, well into her nineties. Margaret was a great example that golf truly is a game for a lifetime a lifetime that was exceptional.
