Ruth Meyer, Ph.D. 79, died Monday, January 29, 2018. Dr. Meyer was born on June 3, 1938 in Pender, NE, the daughter of Dick and Rose Meyer. She graduated from Thurston High School, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1964, her Master of Arts degree from Wichita State University in 1966, and her Doctor of Philosophy degree from Kansas State University in 1978. She taught at the University of Northern Iowa, Morningside College, Wichita State University, and Newman University (formerly Sacred Heart College) in Wichita. She was a member of American Association of Professors, American Association of University Women, Modern Language Association and National Council of Teachers of English. She was awarded the honor of membership in Phi Kappa Phi for academic achievement at NWU. She was also a member of Foreign Language and English honor societies. Her Masters Thesis was published in Educational Theatre Journal, sponsored then by the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Her doctoral dissertation was under consideration for publication at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Meyer also worked for the State of Kansas, retiring from full-time employment as Employment Resources Manager for all grants and contracts within an eleven-county management area. She subsequently became the editorial consultant and test developer for the Medical Training Unit at Wichita State University which developed and provided training for all Community Mental Health Centers in Kansas. Travel in Europe was her favorite leisure pastime. She made nearly a dozen trips there covering nearly all the countries of Europe. She also often visited her fathers family near Bremen. She was passionate about learning, literature, and the beauty of nature. Upon retirement from full-time employment, she immediately enrolled as a graduate student again, specializing in European history and photography. Dr. Meyer was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1965 by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Turner of Kansas, and at the time of her death was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Wichita.A Requiem Eucharist will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church Chapel, on Sunday, February 4 at 2:00 pm. Private burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Pender, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, she wishes for memorials to be made to: Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS, 67219. She was preceded in death by her parents. There are no survivors. Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.
