jim west
West, Jim D., began his lifes journey on May 21, 1944. It came to an end on Thursday, December 18, 2008, after a short struggle with brain cancer. Jim was sixty-four years old. Cremation has occurred. Visitation with the family 2:00-4:00 P.M., Sunday, December 28; Memorial Service, 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 29, both at Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Haroldena Bozarth, and his grandparents, Henry and Hazel Bozarth. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Karen Sanders-West, his daughter, Saren Leta West, his mother-in-law, Leta Sanders, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Mike Wyant, nephews, Mason Wyant and Nick Wyant, great-nephew and nieces, Mason Wyant, Jr., Macy and Jessie Wyant. Jims brothers also survive, Jack West and Dale West, along with nephew, Jack West, Jr. Jims much loved puppies, Abe and Alice, will miss their “dad” and their walks together. Jim attended Mulvane and Harper High Schools, graduating from the latter. He had a gift for numbers, organization, and people skills. He worked as an administrative manager in the office design, furniture and supply business. He retired in 2007. Although his retirement lasted for too short a time, Jim made good use of the time he had. He took Alice and Abe on long walks, worked on keeping his yard looking good, and enjoyed working on the family farms in Harper County. Jim had a special talent for being able to figure out what it took to do or fix anythinghis last project was completing a new set of stairs into the walkout patio of the familys home. He also was a great story teller and we will miss the laughter his stories gave us. Jim loved his family and his home. He also loved the game of golf and worked hard at being the best golfer he could. His name is familiar to the golfing world as someone who played a great game. He won a lot of golf tournaments and played regularly until his health took that pleasure away from him. Jim was a member of Rolling Hills Country Club where he played golf with a group of friends on a regular basis. Although his golfing buddies will surely miss him, they will probably not miss the pain he often inflicted on their wallets. These words are not adequate to describe the life of a wonderful man, but suffice they must at this time. Much beloved by so many, losing Jim leaves a void in our lives forever. Be kind to animals, Be kind to trees, Be kind to the earth and everything on it, Be kind to children and one anotherand God will be kind to you. And thats a promise! Please remember Jim with contributions to the Kansas Humane Society, 4218 Southeast Blvd, Wichita, KS 67210. Visitation with the family, 2:00-4:00 P.M., Sunday, December 28, Downing Lahey Mortuary West

  1. Dear Karen Words cannot express my sorrow for your loss. I am so sorry such a tragic thing had to happen to Jim. I cannot imagine you without him or him without you. I know he will be missed by many, many friends — but nothing like he will be missed you and Saren. My love to you at this most difficult time. Jimmie Sue Marsh

  2. Karen & Family, I want you to know how much Jim meant to all of us, his golfing buddies, that played golf with him when I was at Rolling Hills back in the ’80’s. Jim lovingly became one of the infamous ‘Westbrothers’ along with our friend Chet. But of course, everyone knew they weren’t really related( I think)! It was always a great game and the ‘Westbrothers’ were always the center of the game. As pro, I would always look forward to the game along with Rod Nuckolls, Carlton Dienstbach, Joe White, Lou Holland, Chet West and many others! We always laughed and had a great time with Jim – who wouldn’t! Many times the game would become very competitive but always ended with a ‘Col-beer’ or two at the end of the round in the grill. I always enjoyed the golf trips we all made and Jim was always there making it fun for all of us. He was a great golfer, one of the straightest drivers of the game. ‘CS#1’ as Lou lovingly called Jim, was always in the fairway off the tee. Jim always made a lot of pars in each round – a great partner to have. I know you’ve lost a great partner as well. Jim West will always be in our hearts!
