Billy E. Schmidt

Schmidt, Billy E., 92, retired Architect passed away Friday, September 5, 2014. Graveside service is 10:00 am Monday, September 22 at the Hillside Cemetery, Sedgwick, KS. Billy was born July 27, 1922 in Newton, KS to William F. and Leta Faye Schmidt and later moved to Sedgwick, where he grew up. He Graduated from Sedgwick High School and attended Kansas State University for 2 years before enlisting in the Army Air Corp. He was a decorated co-pilot, veteran of WWII and while stationed on Tinian, he flew 35 missions over Japan. After returning from service, he finished his Bachelor of Architecture degree at KSU and was also a member of Sigma Tau fraternity. He began his career in Wichita and worked on some of Wichitas most recognizable buildings, including the original Henry Levitt Arena, Wichita City Building, Coleman Junior High and Hillside Christian Church. He later became partner and practiced architecture for 35 years. He also had a love for sailing and became Commodore of the Ninnescah Yacht Club and continued to sail well into his 70s. Billy was active in Boy Scouts, the Democratic Party and was a Deacon of Hillside Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 66 years Dorothy; children, William (Carol) Schmidt of Wichita, Patricia Westerfield of Springfield, MO; grandchildren, Shay Schmidt, Whitney Krumick, Tanner Westerfield; great-grandchildren, Kirby and Lucy Krumsick and Ryan and Victoria Westerfield.
