Roy Lindell McCracken

McCracken, Roy Lindell, 91, passed away Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, February 15, at Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Roy was born February 2, 1916 in Melvern, Kansas, the son of Walter and Nina (Lewis) McCracken. He married Marguerite Hyatt on August 19, 1941 in Liberty, Missouri. As a young man, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. As a member of the 90th Infantry Division, he participated in the Normandy Landing at Utah Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Europe. Roy later joined the 2nd Infantry Division and served in Korea, 1950-51. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. A man of many skills, he worked as a machinist and security guard and dabbled in antiques. He was an avid fisherman and sportsman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Marguerite, and his parents. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Beahan and husband, Gary, of Columbia, MO, and Laura Sickles and husband, Gary, of Wichita; seven grandchildren, Matthew Spurlock, Sean Beahan and wife, Patty, Brian Beahan, Casie Kennedy, Cori Kennedy Schmidt and husband, Kyle, Samantha Sickles, and Miranda Sickles. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Ora and Nella McCracken of Chanute, KS and Bernard and Marion McCracken of Fort Madison, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), P.O. Box 16261, Wichita, KS 67216.
