Scheibe, Harlan W., 89, of Wichita, KS, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011. The Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 600 N. Greenwich, Wichita. Harlan was born October 21, 1921 in Waterville, KS, to Herman and Anna (Leesberg) Scheibe, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1939 and attended Emporia State before serving in the Army during World War II. Harlan married Lorene Hawkins on June 22, 1947, and celebrated 51 years of marriage until she passed in 1999. After the war, Harlan began a long successful career for Aid Association for Lutherans where he worked for 40 years until his retirement as a General Agent in 1986. He enjoyed serving the needs of his clients while developing close personal relationships with them. He was a great mentor to other AAL agents, helping to guide them to successful careers. Harlan loved traveling, sports, investments, and gardening. He was an avid Jayhawk basketball fan. In 1946, when he was discharged from the military, he hitchhiked to Lawrence, KS, to watch a basketball game in Hoch Auditorium. Among his world travels, one of his highlights was taking his granddaughters to Palm Springs, California to visit his sister, Ruth. When Harlan traveled to Kansas City to visit family, he often brought his delicious homegrown tomatoes as well as barbeque ribs form Williamsburg, KS. He will be remembered for his strong faith, love of family, and his sense of humor. Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, five sisters, and one brother. He is survived by two daughters, Sara Baldwin and her husband, George of Overland Park, KS, Ann Harrell and her husband, Sam of Wichita, KS and five granddaughters,, Caroline Baldwin Mermis, Julie Baldwin Wolf, Anne Baldwin, Katie Harrell Platt and Allison Harrell. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lutheran Laymans League, 660 Mason Ridge Center, St. Louis, MO 63141.

Harlan was largely responsible for my career with AAL now Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. He was a wonderful mentor, a good friend and fellow member at Holy Cross. We’re praying for the surviving family that God will fill the void in your hearts at Harlen’s passing. He is now with his Lord
