Moore, Arline L. (Watkins), 86, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, kicked the bucket Thursday, September 30, 2010. Moms sense of humor was wicked and endearing and she herself chose the expression weve used to announce her passing. Visitation with the family, 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 5, Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Graveside service, 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 6, Resthaven Cemetery. Born September 20, 1924, Arline was the second of three children born to Claire and Golda (Palmer) Watkins. A native and devoted Wichitan, she graduated from North High and Kansas State University. She married Jean Oliver Moore on June 9, 1948, and they lived in Lawrence, Kansas, while she worked and Dad finished law school. Back in Wichita, they settled in Riverside and raised four children. She was a fulltime mother and housewife, happy to host the house on the block where kids and pets were always welcomed and fed. An accomplished cook and candy maker, she was famous for her peanut brittle, which was always the first to go at the church bazaars. She was the family letter writer, staying in touch with all and passing family news from one branch to the other over the years. Many have shared that they treasured her letters and kept them for years. She was predeceased by her parents, sister, Lois Morrow of Bremerton, WA, brother, Ronald Watkins of Clearwater, and her youngest son, Kevin David Moore. She leaves a son, Colin (Cathie) Moore, two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Jackson of San Rafael, CA and Rossanne (Dan) Thomson, granddaughter, Erin (Jarvis) Velez, grandson, Jarrod Moore, great-granddaughter, Adelle Olivia Velez, sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Wales of Cincinnati, OH, and many nieces, nephews and dear family friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and remembered always. Memorial established with the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131. Visitation with family, 7:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 5, Downing Lahey Mortuary West

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. As Jari’s parents, we only briefly got to know Arline. We came away impressed with her sense of humor and spirited demeanor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

  2. Rossanne, Sorry to hear of your mother. I know you loved her dearly. I remember the times when you shared some of her tasty candy when you worked at First National Bank, many years ago.

  3. Susan- your Mother was truly one of the nicest persons we have ever known, and we cherish many happy memories of her. You and your siblings and other family members have our deepest sympathy for your loss. Sincerely — Jim and Donna Noone

  4. To the Moore family, I am so sorry for your loss. I also grew up in Riverside with all of your family. I remember trick or treating with you in the entire neighborhood, going to Riverside Elementary, Marshall and North. Susan was my classmate. Your house with the big white pillars was an awesome sight in Riverside. I remember thinking it was a mansion! Thinking of you, Jody (Patterson) Bigge

  5. I had the great fortune to grow up across the street from the moore family… my best friend kevin and second mom Arline are sorely missed…Some of my fondest memories are of watching ‘sanford and son’ and ‘mash’ and any mel brooks movie with mrs moore who loved to laugh…I will miss the peanut brittle and the endless pancakes that were always perfectly golden brown…She was an excellent conversationialist and always had a great story and lesson to be learned… Although I did not see her much in her later years, I still thought of her often especially when making her delicious clam dip recipe…godspeed arline, you made this world a better place…
