Esther Steven
March 8, 2016
Esther Sophia Steven, 92, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Steven, Sr.; 2 sons, Tom Steven (Jeanne) and Joe Steven, Jr. (Sandra); and great-grandson, Kadon Gottschalk. Esther is survived by her children, Rod Steven (Becky), Craig Steven (Linda), Brad Steven (Dianna), Dale Steven (Rebecca), Glenn Steven, Sissy Koury (Joe), Diane Clark (Alan), Rene Brand (Mike) and Duane Steven; 38 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, and 4 on the way. Esther raised 11 children and often sent them to work at the family business, Joes Carwash, where they learned about business and the value of hard work. But at 6 p.m. every night, the family would be home for dinner. Esther was born in Boyden, Iowa, before moving to Charleston, West Virginia, Sioux City, Iowa, and ultimately Wichita. After high school, she attended Wichita Business School before her first job at Beech Aircraft. She married the love of her life on June 16, 1946, at St. Marys Cathedral. Joe and Esther were inseparable and remained in love the duration of their marriage of 64 years (before his passing in 2010). If there was a party to attend, they did! If there was an orchestra in town, they would be on the dance floor. Esther loved holidays and would decorate their home while Joe decorated the exterior. Christmas was their favorite. Generation after generation of Wichitans came through the Steven driveway where children would receive a candy cane from Santa while everyone enjoyed the Christmas lights and displays, and the family collected donations for the Wichita Childrens Home, raising thousands of dollars over the years. After Joes passing, Esthers life centered on family and wouldnt hesitate to tell you how proud she was of hers. She was happiest with family, particularly during Sunday lunches at home, which never lacked for food and entertaining conversation. Esther was known for her cooking, as well as her great memory, wit, and wisdom. She loved hearing about her grandchildrens lives and sharing a bit of hers with them. She was a true example of the meaning of family and marriage. Although Esther loved life, she was buying time until she could reunite with Joe and recently said she wished he was here. Well Mom, we are so happy you got your wish to be with Dad again. We can see the gleam in his eye and his little grin as he says, “You want to dance Esther?” Rosary, 6 p.m. Sunday, March 13; Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, both at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
