Mary Jean Linnebur, 85, passed away November 4, 2019. Received her music education degree from Wichita University, taught at Cheney Elementary, and retired from USD 259 after 40 years. She had a very strong faith and volunteered her time with various organizations at her parish. Rosary will be Thursday, November 7th at 7:00 pm, Funeral Mass will be Friday, November 8th at 11:30 am, both at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 2007 N Arkansas, Wichita KS. Burial at St. John Cemetery, Clonmel KS. Preceded in death by her parents, Urban “Fritz” and Louise (Hoppe) Linnebur; brother, Jim Linnebur; brother-in-law, Hibbard Davis. Survived by sister, Joan Davis; sister-in-law, Dolores Linnebur; nieces and nephews, Doug Linnebur, Tom, Nathan, Chris, and Joe Davis, Denise Cox; numerous great nieces and nephews. A couple nights ago, a lovely soul left us. My mom’s sister, Mary Jean Linnebur, passed away Monday evening. Though she never had children of her own, she had tremendous passion for and took great pride in the countless children she taught as a music educator. Over her 40-year career of sharing her love of music with her students, she touched many lives–several of my friends had Ms. Linnebur as their music teacher at either McLean or OK Elementary. As her nephew and Godson, I always saw my aunt as a loving, adventurous soul. I admired her for her interest in and love for me and my brothers, but I especially was inspired by her interest in experiencing life. Maybe her love for life stemmed from her being a cancer survivor; regardless, she was always up for an adventure. Her basement was a museum of delight for me–filled with an array of artifacts, instruments, books, albums, scrapbooks, etc. from her life-adventures here at home and from around the world–not to mention there being a ping-pong table to boot where my brothers and I spent numerous holiday gatherings exercising our sibling rivalries armed with what eventually became a set of dented balls and peeled paddles. Her heart and soul was devoted to her Catholic faith, and much of her retirement was dedicated volunteering through her church. If you knew my aunt, you knew what a special person she was.
Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done. Rest in Peace Mary.
Ms. Linnebur was my music teacher at Cleveland Elementary in the late ‘60s. I remember her teaching us Hiku poems as well. She was a wonderful teacher and made a big impression on me. I am so glad she continued to teach all those years. May you Rest In Peace Ms. Linnebur!
