Larry LeRoy Smith - a teacher to hundreds, a mentor to many, and a friend to all - died November 16, 2020 in Wichita, Kansas. Larry was born on January 3, 1941, to Donald and Catherine Smith in Hammond, Indiana. Larry was an avid reader of many types of books that helped in his love of communication with people. Puzzles were a pivotal part of his rest and relaxation while watching baseball and other sports. Larry shared a love of music from his playing of a piccolo in the marching band to his tenor rich voice in singing. The choir of heaven is benefitting from his musical abilities and desire to give glory to our Lord. Educated in the Hammond area school district and graduating from Morton High school, Larry felt the calling of pastoral ministry. He went to Minnesota Bible College and completed a degree in Biblical literature with the support of his wife, Patricia Knight, and the birth of a special red-haired daughter, Debra. He returned to his home church at First Christian Church in Hessville, Indiana to become the first of many “Timothys” send out to spread the Word of God. At this time, their son, Philip, was born to the family. He will be remembered for his teasing jokes, wildly entertaining (sometimes long) stories, and powerful testimonies. He will also be remembered for his unfailing work ethic, love of his family, his generous smile, and his willingness to come and help neighbors, friends, and family in need. You could always count on his use of the Scripture to guide you to a decision. His memory will be kept alive by his beloved and committed wife, Patricia, of 59 years (1961 - 2020) and by his steadfast and loving children - Debra Ann (1962) and Philip Wayne (1967). His 7 grandchildren were a jewel in his crown. He loved them all. Larry was also blessed with 3 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Jean Arden McTaggart, and her husband, John, in DeLand, Florida. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley Thornton, in Valparaiso, Indiana. Psalms 23 brought much comfort to those who Larry ministered to, and we who miss him so gain strength in knowing that he dwells “in the house of the Lord forever.” Rest in peace, Larry, your days of physical suffering are over. Enjoy the presence of the Lord!
