Dawn Rene Lucas

February 10, 1952 ~ May 18, 2021
Dawn Rene (Miller-Hanley) Lucas, 69, was called into the presence of our Lord on May 18, 2021, while in the comfort of her home with her family at her side. Dawn was born February 10, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Philip and Marion Miller, now both deceased. On August 1, 1981, Dawn married her best friend and lover, Robert Lucas, who survives of the home in Wichita. Dawn was a seven-year survivor of a double lung transplant. She never lost hope in receiving the gift of life for a second time; unfortunately, time ran out and that wasn’t to be. Dawn started The Wichita Area Lung Transplant Support Group as an avenue of support and encouragement to those pre-transplant and post-transplant. Dawn was an open book in that she was prolific in sharing her health struggles, worries, and weaknesses. Despite the last year of difficulty due to chronic rejection of her lungs, Dawn continued to inspire others with her love of life and fight to live, her positivity, and her bravery. She cherished the fact that her daughter called her a beast! Her passing marks the loss of a good woman, wife, mother, memaw and friend. Dawn is survived by her husband, Bob; her daughter, Ashley Lucas-Courtney (Tom) and their son, Westley; son, James Minzey and his son, Damon Levi (Brooklyn); two great-granddaughters, Stella and Misti; her sister, Sandra Romprey and her daughter, Amy; brother, Scott Hanley (Toni), nephews Brian and J.P.; and also survived by her furry children, EmmaRose and ShebaKitty. Dawn was preceded in death by her parents; her two sons, Mark Matthew and Raby Timothy; her grandson, Damon Ryan; brother, Paul, and niece, Krista. From Dawn: “A special thank you to Elizabeth Hotaling, the founder of The Adventurous Babes Society, for enhancing the last years of my life with fun events and amazing women to share those events. And a very special thank you to my husband for all the years of staying by my side through many illnesses and trying times. Thank you isn’t enough.” There will be a Graveside Service at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, May 21, in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dawn’s final wishes were for donations to Second Wind of St. Louis (secondwindstl.org) in support of lung transplant recipients and their families. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
My heartfelt condolences to the family!!! I haven’t known her as an adult but so many years ago in Jr High we had a lot of fun. She lived just down the street from me. When I had to move with my family I totally lost contact with her. But finally about 3 years ago I found her on Facebook and rekindled our friendship. I was amazed at the struggles she had overcome with her health. Rest and breath peacefully Dawn!!!!! No more struggles!!!
Dawn was a very nice lady and sent me nice messages when my daughter passed, I know she will be missed
Besides being a beautiful soul, Dawn was there for me when I was battling a lung issue. I was very sick, very afraid and did not know what to do. Dawn reached out and gave me hope, sound advice on what to ask for and a sense of calm. I will never forget her great kindness! Rest easy in God’s arms sweet Dawn.
Dawn was a wonderful women full of life and had a heart of gold!! She will be missed by many!!
I grew up with Ashley when we were in scouts together and throughout my school age years spent a lot of time in their house. She was a second mom to me in those years. I remember her talking about Prince and Enrique Iglesias and how she would make me laugh. As an adult we once played cards against humanity and her and bob made it so much fun! I enjoyed her company with the ABS, playing LCR is a fond memory. We also did Yoga with them and she would give me a hard time about smoking. I have since quit smoking. This past year with covid was difficult. I felt bad about visiting in person, but I did see her over video chat with Ashley from time to time. I know that she is free from her pain and suffering now, and that is comforting albeit sad. We will keep her memory alive in our circles and stories. Rest in Peace, Dawn
Our thoughts and prayers for all of Dawn’s family and friends. The Terry Family
Sweet Dawn, so full of life and love, so welcoming and fun, you will be remembered often and very missed.
