Michael George Dionisi, 64, found peace in Heaven on Aug. 18, 2021 after experiencing complications of his bone marrow transplant as part of his fight against leukemia. Born on Aug. 17, 1957, he was the youngest son of the late Joseph and Dorothy Dionisi. Mike grew up in Stony Brook, New York, playing trombone in the school band led by his father and roaming the sandbars at low tide on West Meadow Beach alongside his three siblings. He went on to play soccer at Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, citing these years as some of the most formative in his Christian faith. He worked as a CPA for many years in Great Bend, Kansas, where he met his wife, Devon, with whom he shared wonderful companionship for 28 years. Upon moving to Wichita, Kansas, Mike and Devon welcomed their two daughters, Leah and Meg, which were some of the most joyous days of his life. Mike was a devoted member of the loving community of Blessed Sacrament Parish for 30 years, where he lived his faith through involvement in church stewardship and lecturing. In recent years, he found great purpose in sharing his gift of teaching, most notably in economics at Butler Community College and McConnell Air Force Base. His depth of impact was evidenced by nominations from his beloved students for top teaching awards several years in a row. His most loved moments included entertaining his cats, watching English Premier League and the Chiefs, tending to his homegrown tomatoes, strolling Botanica Gardens, and sharing precious time with his family. Mike will always be admired for his spiritual conviction, goofy humor, and intellectual curiosity, and his family remains in awe of his intestinal fortitude in the toughest of moments. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Audrey, and brother-in-law, James Smith. He is survived by his wife, Devon (Brazda) Dionisi; daughters, Leah (Brock Diebolt) and Margaret; sisters, Donna (Dionisi) Smith and Patricia (Robert) Budolfson; and brother, Joseph (Debbie Drash) Dionisi. A rosary will be held Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 7:00 pm; Memorial services will be Friday, September 3, 2021, at 10:00 am, both at Blessed Sacrament Church. The mass will be live streamed through Blessed Sacrament's YouTube page. A private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery. Donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the St. Vincent De Paul Society c/o Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 124 N. Roosevelt, Wichita, KS 67208. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

  1. I truly enjoyed Mike’s warm and welcoming personality. He was such a great conversationalist and always took time to listen and find out how you were doing. He was one of the most dedicated fathers and husband that I know. He loved his girls and Devon deeply. He was a full of vigor for his faith. He was so active in our church and I found it comforting having him lector at mass. I will miss Mike so very much.

  2. I was so sad to hear of Mike’s passing. He was such a good friend at Butler CC. I always enjoyed talking with him at McConnell and at Saturday sessions. We worked together to get through the spring after going remote. He was always so proud of his daughters – not sure we ever had a conversation where he didn’t mention them. Such a proud dad. I am so sorry. God Bless, Bruce Fiscus

  3. I received my copy of the Ambassador today. It is the quarterly alumni journal from Asbury University. I was so sad to see Michael’s obituary. He was a friend from Asbury. We were in one French class together, he was a teacher’s pet with his NewYork accent and wit, he was a welcomed breath of fresh air always in this small southern college. He came from Stony Brook that year, Cheryl Cushing, she was my roommate. I think they were from the same church maybe. All I know is he was so cute, I was a year younger, and he just made everyone laugh. God bless his wife and daughters.
