Billie Merle Nickel was born in Fairview, Oklahoma to Harry and Lula (Gertz) Nickel on July 15, 1938. He attended Fairview, Oklahoma public schools and graduated in 1956. After high school, he worked at the Boeing Company for a short time before joining the Kansas Air National Guard. He transferred from the Guard in December of 1987 and began his work in the private sector with the Department of Defense and retired in 1993. In what the newspaper called the “Money Marriage”, Bill married Robbie (Cash) Nickel on July 4, 1959. They set up home in Wichita, Kansas and lived there throughout their 62 years of marriage. During that time, they had 3 children that has grown to include 3 in-laws, 10 grandchildren, 4 grandchildren’s spouses, and 5 great-grandchildren. Bill’s faith was an important part of his life and he stayed actively involved at Believer’s Baptist Church. Throughout his 83 years, he made many strong friendships that included neighbors, church congregations, bowling teams, and his much loved Thursday Night Domino Gang. Bill is survived by his wife, Robbie and children Stephanie (Carla) Purusa, Marty (Kimberley) Nickel, and Todd (Kayla) Nickel. Memorial Services will be held Friday, June 17th, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Believer’s Southern Baptist Church. Memorials are set with Believer’s Southern Baptist Church and Traditions Health Hospice.

  2. To the family my condolences! I worked with Bill when I was a crew chief on F-86 and F-100. I transferred to personnel and then to Topeka at State HQ and then the 190th. Saw him a few times at the breakfast. He was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around! He will surely be greatly missed!!
