Naji Toubia

March 29, 1951 ~ July 10, 2022
Naji was born in a large family of seven children in Beirut, Lebanon. His late mother called him “hine’,” a term of endearment in Arabic, in English meaning “gratifying and lighthearted.” Naji immigrated to the U.S. from Lebanon in 1973, adopting Wichita as his home for almost 50 years. He dedicated his life to working with his siblings in the foodservice industry, in which he met his loving wife, Claire.
A scientist by training, he gained his bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from Wichita State University and his master’s degree in food science from Texas A&M University. Instead of pursuing a career in the sciences, he answered the call to help grow his brother’s businesses, especially Bagatelle Bakery, which Naji and Claire ran for almost 40 years. Naji was known far and wide for being an extremely hard worker; however, he always took the time to make those around him feel special and to embrace the role of being a mentor.
Naji loved spending countless hours outdoors, especially in his garden and on the water. He instilled upon his children the values of acceptance, dedication, and most of all, a thirst for knowledge.
Naji passed on July 10, 2022, at the age of 71, surrounded by his wife and four children. His family invites you to donate to the Andover YMCA Tornado Relief Fund and PBS Kansas in his honor.
Memorial Service will be at 4:00 pm, Tuesday, July 26, 2022, in the Lotus Room at Botanica. A recording of the service can be viewed by clicking "Watch Event" below.

Randa, Gracia, Claire and all the family. We are thinking of you at this time of great sadness. I remember Naji when he and Fr. Stephen were young workers at a little restaurant down town, And of course he worked tirelessly at Bagatel with Claire to get us all fed. Dotty Billings
For many years, my family spent holidays in Wichita at my parents’ house on Willow Road where we would be joined by my brother’s and sisters’ families. We had a link to the Tubia family through brother Greg’s marriage to Gracia. Those festive gatherings invariably included gatherings with the Tubia family, often accompanied by food they had prepared. One of our traditions was to swing by The Bagatelle for a Lebanese meal and to visit with Claire, Naji and any other family members who happened to be working there. Invariably, Claire, behind the counter, greeted us and took our food orders. Naji was focused on food preparation but if he knew we were there or if we sought him out, he always had time to welcome us and to chat. Although we knew Naji mostly from a slice of his life, we have always realized that, within the Tubia family, as a husband, father, brother and uncle, he played a loving and important role. And he has been an inspiration to all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Claire and his family. Mark & Diana Stucky and family

Claire and all, I’m so very sorry for this huge loss to your family. What a kind soul and hard worker, in addition to being an outstanding chef. He always made me feel welcome in your home. I’m so blessed to have known him. Karen Powell
When I first met Naji it was at the crestview country club where he worked in the kitchen and I was a busboy, next time we met he was married to my wife’s cousin Claire. Naji always had a smile for me each time I saw him whether at the Bagatelle or at a family gathering. He will be dearly missed by all Brian Ahlers
