Richard A. "Dick" Edgington, died on October 10, 2022.He was born in Marion, Ohio on August 9, 1931. Dick led a very eventful and meaningful life. By age 11, he had his first job delivering milk on Saturday mornings. Then he decided to join the National Guard in Ohio at age 13 with his father’s signed permission. He then joined the Air Force at 14 and flew as a gunner on B-29 airplanes by age 15. In 1946 he sailed to Okinawa, Japan and was promoted to Corporal. He spent 2 years there and returned home in 1948 to be stationed in Salina, Kansas. Shortly after that he was transferred to March Air Force Base located near Riverside, California. In July of 1950, he was sent back to Okinawa. On October 19, 1950 he was 1 of 3 men to survive a military plane crash off the coast of Okinawa during a training exercise. The other 9 men on board did not survive. After that, he was stationed in Spain from 1959-1962 and then lived in England before returning to the states. Dick retired from the Air Force on July 1, 1966 as a Master Sergeant at the age of 34. He was awarded 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Metal. He then joined Salina’s police department and served the community until retiring in 1986 as a Patrol Lieutenant. He eloped to the love of his life, Mary Buser (Edgington), on December 26, 1981. Together they shared a wonderful life in Wichita surrounded by family and friends. Dick and Mary were dedicated members of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. They were also very involved with the College Hill neighborhood community. They opened their home to countless friends over the years who were in need or just visiting, never hesitating to provide them with a bed and dinner. Dick had friends from all over the world from traveling. He enjoyed attending gun shows, gardening, and hosting company. He always had a story to tell or a joke to crack. I figured you were getting pretty tired and missing Mary. Thank you for the honor of your friendship. You’ll be hearing from me.❤️
Dick was a dear and faithful friend.I had just visited him a couple of weeks ago. We spent 28 years together in law enforcement and developed a wonderful friendship one I will always treasure. My prayers are with his family and all friends who was blessed to know Dick🙏
Dick was the best Lieutenant I ever worked for, and I admit that he kept me out of trouble a few times. I always enjoyed his stories about joining the Air Force under age and his stories of the old days on the Police Dept. Him and Mary opened their house to me when my wife and premature son were in the hospital for months. I owed them a debt I could never repay. Heaven gained an angel and I know he with Mary. I’m very sorry for your loss he was truly one of the greatest.
Rest Richard, until you hear at dawn, the low, clear reveille of God.
Thank you for your service to this nation. U.S. Air Force.
Dick and Mary were absolutely the most wonderful neighbors for over 25 years. They were both very special people.

My condolences to Valerie and the family. I first met Richard in 1973 when his daughter and I were planning on getting married. Visited with them many times over the years in Salina and Wichita. He and Mary flew to Germany one year to visit us at Zweibrucken Air Base and we traveled the country having fun, seeing the sights, eating great food & drinking beer. Dick was a good man and took good care of my children, (Michael, Chris & Angela) when for one reason or another, I wasn’t there for them.
I know he will be missed by family and friends but he is home now with his beloved Mary and our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. EOW: 10/10/2022 Rest In Peace Dick…Rest In Peace.
I was very sad to learn of Dick’s death. I first met him when he was a Lt. with the Salina, Kansas Police Department and I was working with others in the community to create a program to help abused women and their children. I had received a call from Brown Mackie College that one of their students had been abused and needed help. After taking her to Asbury Hospital for care, Dick met us at the home she shared with her husband and a baby kitten. Both the woman and the kitten had been severely abused. Dick provided us with protection as she packed and we removed her belongings and the kitten from the home. At the last minute the husband tried to get into my car and Dick arrested him. Dick also testified at the trial. Over the years I saw him and after I moved to Wichita I visited with him and Mary. He was a non-nonsense guy and someone I respected and admired. I am so sorry for your loss. I’ll keep you in my thoughts.
