Elvin John (Johnnie) Bell

April 27, 1927 ~ March 27, 2023
Elvin John (Johnnie) Bell, 95, died March 27, 2023, peacefully at his home in Wichita, Kansas. Johnnie was born April 27, 1927, in Wichita, Kansas to Fred Morton and Helen Rose (Sponsel) Bell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years, Laurestine Champ, their daughter Margaret Rose Vance, and grandson Luke DeBoise Stephen. Johnnie is survived by his children, Janet (Brad) Stephen, Mary Grace (Fred) Muck, Michael (Traci) Bell, Mark (Sherry) Bell and son-in-law Gregg Vance, 13 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.
As a young man Johnnie joined the US Marine Corp. After his military service, he attended Fort Hays State University. When he returned to Wichita, he followed in his Father’s and Grandfather’s footsteps in the flooring business. He established the Johnnie Bell Floor Company on Douglas Avenue, which continues in the fourth generation today by his son, Mark, as Bell Carpet and Floors. Johnnie was a lifelong devout Catholic raised in St. Joseph Parish as a boy, and then with Laurie raising their family in St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Along with his faith, his life’s devotion was to the love of his wife and family. Other outside endeavors included membership in many civic and charitable organizations including the Serra Club, Center of Hope and Newman University. In all aspects of his life, his contagious optimism made him a natural leader. He had the ability to light up every room he entered and lift those around him. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
Rosary will be Tuesday, April 4th at 7:30 pm; Funeral Mass on Wednesday, April 5th at 10:30 am, both at St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Services will be officiated by Father Dan Spexarth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 3652 North Ridge Road, Wichita, Kansas 67205 or St. Joseph Catholic Church, 132 South Millwood, Wichita, Kansas 67213 in memory of Johnnie Bell. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.

Great man, very upstanding, We always referred to Johnnie as a great Southern Gentleman. Provided me with great business philosophies as I started my banking career.
To the Bell family you have our deepest sympathy and love.

Johnnie, I learned a lot from the experiences I had with you in finding housing for the homeless population. I learned that we should give all people second chances but yet hold them accountable. You always seemed to have kind words for me and advice which always made me look forward to our meetings. You will be sorely missed but I know you and Ma Bell just made heaven a little better place to be. My prayers to you and your family.
I met Johnny and Laurie when Mike played for the Chiefs . Karen Travis introduced me and they made feel welcome and apart of the football family. I had a
KC Chiefs charm on a necklace. “MA Bell” liked the charm and asked Johnny to talk to me about selling the charm. The sell took place and the next day I bought my new charm. Every home game or visit to Wichita, I felt the love of Johnny and Laurie. You’ll be missed.
Johnnie Bell, in my little world, he is known as Mr “Jet Opem”! I loved this man ! I loved his passion, his love of his Family, his Pride, and his desire to honor others ‘ especially those he loved! Mr Jet Open was a wonderful man with a wonderful family, and he always knew it and he therefore always talked about his family ! The world is a better place because Johnnie Bell made it better! I will cherish my many golf cart rides, passing out cigars and the many meeting we had at my NU office!! Continued prayers for sure for Johnnie and the entire Bell Family! Thank you Johnnie Bell for all you are, and all you have meant to this community and especially me !! May he Rest in Peace ‘ Amen .
Our mother, Olga Thimesch, cleaned Johnnie & Laurestine’s house until she was 80 years old. Olga loved your family. Olga died in 2015, she was 95 years old. Our brother, Bob, worked for Johnnie Bell Floor Co. Bob died in 2021, he was 77 years old. Carolyn Thimesch Bergkamp attended Johnnie’s funeral and Laurestine’s funeral too. Both were a wonderful tribute to them.
Love to all of you. Judy, Irene, Carolyn, Dan & Janice
Janet, so very sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. It’s so so hard to lose a parent. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers!
