Carl Wesley Bruce, 82, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023. Carl was born on August 30, 1940, in Seagraves, TX to Pearl Virginia (Trim) and Clyde Oliver Bruce. When Carl was in elementary school the family moved to Enid, OK where his mother provided day care for families and his father worked in the oil fields. After graduating from Enid High School, Carl attended Oklahoma State University, followed by 4 years serving our country in the Air Force. After that, he attended a trade school in Oklahoma City where he became proficient in Computer Science in its infancy. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Claudette Bruce Lake; and nephew, Chip Lake. He is survived by his long-time life-partner, Mary Williams of Wichita, KS; daughter, Lara Lynn Bruce; grandson, Seth Aaron Battleson; granddaughter, Sundae Rose Battleson; former wife, Jeanette Lynch Bruce all of Winston-Salem, NC; step-brother, Clyde Wayne Bruce, Borger, TX; niece, Judy Lake Wasserman, Garden Ridge, TX; nephew, Jay Lake, AZ; and several beloved cousins in Texas. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Carl's professional history consisted of many years of successful experience in organizational development, information systems development, computer installations and operations, financial administration, large scale data conversions and personnel administration, mostly in the telecommunications field. He began his working career at Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem, NC. He then joined Student Loan Marketing Assn. (Sallie Mae), followed among others, by MCI telecommunications in Washington DC, all in computer-related management roles. While at MCI the micro-computer came on the business scene. He realized a great opportunity to develop application software that could process certain data more cost effectively than the big computers could. So Carl created Micro-Technology Consulting, Inc., a company which designed, developed and supported hotel and banking software, until his retirement in 2003. At that time, he moved from his home in McLean, VA to Wichita, KS to join Mary. They both loved to travel and spent as much time as possible traveling around the United States and Internationally. Our sincere appreciation goes to Faith Home Health and Hospice for their comfort and loving care of Carl in his last months and to Larksfield Place for their continued care and support. Private entombment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid, OK. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Head to Toe Hygiene Pantry in care of University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29th St N, Wichita, KS 67226 or to Kansas Food Bank, 1919 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67211, or to a charity of your choice. Services in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Mary & Carl you are so loved and remembered with years of making memories with our Legorge dinner group and all the fun and memorable trips. Larry would say to me especially after our dinner group nights how much he enjoyed you, Love and Peace Carl🙏

  2. A lovely man, one who brought years of happiness to our friend Mary – whose care and management of Carl’s care in his last years was unwavering – and who had brought years of good company, love and support to her as well.

  3. Rest Carl, until you hear at dawn, the low, clear reveille of God. Thank you for your service to this nation. U.S. Air Force.

  4. I hold Carl in my mind and heart as a loving uncle and a genuinely warm and happy man. He loved to laugh. Although our lives were geographically distant, our paths crisscrossed at clear moments in my memory.

As a child I thought Uncle Carl was a giant – over six feet tall was exceptionally tall back then.

As a mid-adult I thought he was a business genius with exceptional people skills and always a big smile.

As a senior-adult I recognized that Carl was an even better man with Mary. She completed him and his happiness.

I’m blessed and better to be a small part of Carl’s life.
