Marvin Flickinger

September 23, 1938 ~ July 30, 2023
Marvin Flickinger was born to Fred and Anna (Stucky) Flickinger on September 23, 1938, in Moundridge, KS. He was raised on a farm four miles north of Moundridge. Marvin, the youngest of five children, attended Farms, a country school. At home, his parents instilled a good work ethic, a religious foundation, and a respect for his material blessings. He was a graduate of Moundridge High School in 1958.
After graduation, he married Rita Ediger from Buhler, KS, on September 3, 1961. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. As newlyweds, they lived in Halstead, KS, for many years before building a home in Newton where they resided for 28 years. They recently relocated to Wichita in 2022 to be closer to church, friends, and family.
During their marriage, they welcomed a daughter, Amy Sue on July 27, 1962. Four years later, Todd Marvin was born July 9, 1966; he passed September 16, 1966, from polycystic kidney disease.
Marvin’s career began at the Citizen State Bank in Moundridge, KS. In 1968, he embarked in Flickinger Brothers partnership doing custom cutting throughout Kansas and Nebraska. Marvin was very driven and dedicated to his work, and as you can imagine, never failed to have fun on the job. In 1974, Marvin and his brother Laverne started a business of self-employment contracting with implement dealers setting up farm equipment in Kansas and Oklahoma.
Marvin’s personal life was filled with many hobbies and activities. At a young age, his mother would say, “Marvin must be kept busy or he will get into trouble.” In his younger years, he enjoyed weekends skiing at the lake with his boat and camping with family and friends. While Rita was working the night shift nursing, some of Amy’s fondest memories come from their adventures - bicycle riding, playing with her remote-control train, crafting creepy crawlers, and much more. As Amy began to grow up, he took up golf where he would spend time with buddies in Halstead. Once his grandkids arrived, the fun didn’t stop there. Marvin was a very interactive grandpa who always enjoyed playing Rook, celebrating Christmas with his grandkids that always included prank gifts, and teaching them life skills. As Rita would always say, “I have two kids, Amy and Marv.”
Marvin is survived by his wife, Rita Flickinger of Wichita, KS; his daughter, Amy (Andy) Carro of Wichita, KS; his granddaughter, Elizabeth (Lucas) Munds of Wichita, KS; his grandson, Alex (Victoria) Carro of Wichita, KS; his great-granddaughter, Ava Munds; his three siblings, Leland Flickinger of Moundridge, KS, Laverne (Luene) Flickinger of Moundridge, KS, and Evelyn (Norvin) Schrag of Moundridge, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Flickinger; brother, Floyd Flickinger and wife Edith; sister-in-law, Kathy Flickinger; and son, Todd Marvin Flickinger.

Over the years, at Ediger reunions and when Marvin was the grandparent of then-kindergartners, Elizabeth and Alex, we spent time laughing (always laughing) with Marvin. I had the privilege of being his grandchildren’s kindergarten teacher at TIS.
His biting, sweet humor always lightened up the space we were in. Marvin was a loving and fun husband, dad and grandfather to his family. He was diligent to take his family to church and he treasured time with his daughter and her family. He and Rita built beautiful and welcoming homes, wherever they lived. I love the thought that he got to hold his great-granddaughter, Ava Munds, before his death. Dean and I will miss Marvin and his passion for sports ( especially the K-State Wildcats and golf), the way he always made us feel at home and loved, wherever we were. You couldn’t meet Marvin and not walk away with a big smile and a belly hurting from laughter. He built a family of caring people who we love to be around. Recently, President Obama was asked how he wanted to be remembered. He answered, “I want to be remembered as a loving husband and a loving and caring father.” Besides his faith in Jesus Christ, this is how we will remember our dear, sweet, funny friend, Marvin Flickinger. Marvin, say Hi to Lola Beth for us after you see Jesus.

Dear Rita and Family,
So sorry to read about Marvin today in the paper. I remember he made others laugh often. No words can really help now, but only time and our Jesus. God bless. Linda Smith (Bradbury).
