Margo Udelle Imes

June 26, 1943 ~ November 6, 2023
Margo Udelle Imes, 80, born in June 1943 in Tulsa, OK to Lewis A. and Gladys Fielder, passed away Monday, November 6, 2023, in Wichita, KS. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Vernon; sister, Jennifer Younger of Denver, CO; sons, Michael Puckett (Cathy) of Poway, CA, Erik Wolf (Annie) of Owasso, OK, Clinton Wolf (Teresa) of Olathe, KS, Troy Wolf (Jodi) and Kyle Wolf (Monica) all of Wichita; daughter, Joanna Colling (Clay) of Thornton, CO; thirteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by stepdaughters, Linda Imes of New York City and Elizabeth Imes Gordon of Elizabeth, CO.
Margo earned her BA from Fort Hays Kansas State College (now FHSU) in 1969 and taught junior high English briefly before moving to Wichita in 1971. She took some graduate courses at WSU in 1975, then went on to earn a Masters in Management Information Systems from Friends University in 1991. (Not bad for a former high school dropout!)
Margo had a lifelong love of reading, art, and music - hence her ongoing, but futile, attempts to master the piano and guitar! She was also a knowledgeable needleworker, making many quilts, afghans, and articles of clothing for her family. Her love of writing poetry led to two self-published volumes of cowboy poetry and a ten year career performing her poetry at benefit shows and for various groups.
She always loved horses and anything to do with them, so the privilege of serving as a Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy in the Mounted Patrol was especially meaningful to her. Another love was trail riding and camping with horses. She and Vern belonged to two trail riding associations: South Central Kansas Trail Riders Association and Pretty Prairie Trail Riders. Her other affiliations were with the Academy of Western Artists, Kansas Authors Club, and Prairie Wind Storytellers. When back problems forced her to give up horseback riding at age 64, she passed the motorcycle riders course at Alefs Harley Davidson, then got her new “horse”, a 400cc Yamaha Majesty scooter.
Margo and Vern participated in church work teams, ranging from Alaska to New Zealand. They enjoyed many interesting and educational trips with Elderhostel, later renamed Road Scholar, from the American Southwest to Istanbul.
Margo was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Margo requested no flowers, please. Instead, please send remembrances to the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 North Hillside, Wichita, Kansas 67219.
I was at their home trying to load a young horse for hours. Margo came out and said “well I once read you could get a horse to load by blindfolding them” and she brought me a bandana to cover the mares eyes. Guess what? That mare walked right in!
Margo was like a second mom to me. She treated me as one of her own. I am happy she is no longer suffering and is enjoying the fruits of her labors in heaven. Love you Margo.
Mike found this 1967 FHSU yearbook photo of “Margo F. Puckett”. Beautiful!
We are going to miss all the wonderful, fun times we had with you and Vern, and the Class of ’48 for so many years. You’ll be precious in our memories forever.
Love you,
Charlie & Bonnie
It was a privilege and an honor to know Margo. I don’t remember a time she didn’t have a smile on her face, and she made some amazing deserts. I and the rest of my family will miss her. Ride high Margo.
Knowing the end was near, Mom gave away things she no longer needed. The thing I prize most is her digital piano. It has rekindled my “first love”–a phrase I’ve used to describe what the piano means to me through the years.
I’m not one to show my emotions much. The piano is probably where I feel my emotions the most. They come out in tidbits that could maybe be part of a song some day.
I’ll share a short MP3 that is one that flowed out during the last days with mom. I’ve been playing it every day. It has plenty of mistakes–I only play for myself and God usually. He doesn’t mind the mistakes.
