Muriel Slater

muriel slater
Muriel Slater, 73, died Thursday, December 14, 2023. Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am, Friday, December 29, 2023, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church officiated by The Reverend Peter Jacobson. The services will be live streamed and available at: gloriadeiwichita.com or by going straight to YouTube and entering "Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Wichita, Kansas.” She earned a Music Education degree from Wichita State University. She worked in administrative support at Allergy Associates and Via Christi while pursuing her flute playing in many forms. Her faith was central for her, as a lifelong United Methodist, so this often involved playing in church. Most notably, though, she earned a certificate in music ministry, learning to use music to support healing in hospital, rehab, and hospice settings. She not only played beside many beds, but it became part of her job to develop a music ministry, inspiring teams of volunteers to join her. Above all, she was a dedicated and wonderful wife of 51 years, mother, grandmother, and lover of dogs and birds. For many years she bred frill canaries. Songbirds also brought her great joy, as did her Miniature Schnauzers. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Genevieve Wining. She is survived by her husband, Steve Slater of Wichita, KS; son, Jeff (Amy) Slater of Lincoln, NE; brother, Richard (Barbara Gaughan) Wining of Yonkers, NY; grandchildren, Ricky Slater and Sam Slater. A memorial has been established with: Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1101 N. River Blvd., Wichita, KS 67203. Services in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Steve and Jeff, so very sorry to learn of Muriel’s passing. DeDe brought her up in conversation just today. We both thought very highly of her and will miss her.

    Jerry and DeDe Juhnke

  2. Steve and Jeff,
So many fond memories of Muriel. I knew Muriel through the scleroderma group. She was a valued member. We got to be friends, meeting for lunch, discussing our love for dogs, our health issues. I enjoyed painting Odie for her. I’m so shocked she is gone. I will miss her!

    My deepest sympathies.
    Sharon and Dan Leiker

  3. I remember listening to her play How Great Thou Art on her flute in Mark’s room in the hospital and thinking what a wonderful ministry. That was on the day he died seven years ago. Thankful for her gift of caring through music.

  4. I have so many memories of my sweet sister Muriel. She will never be forgotten.
    Her grateful brother Richard Wining

  5. I remember when my brother, Steve and Muriel were married on May 20,1972. I knew that very day that Muriel was the perfect match for my big brother. Our families have many cherished memories of celebrating birthdays, holidays, going to concerts, listening to music and raising our families together for over 50 years. Muriel was such a beautiful and kind person inside and out and I was so blessed to have her as my sister-in-law and also a dear friend. She was a loving wife to my brother as well as a wonderful mother to Jeff and Amy and an awesome Grandmother to Ricky and Sam. Sending my love and condolences to you all. Muriel will be in our hearts forever and she will be dearly missed. Debbie Haney
