Grant Rogers Cox

September 14, 1982 ~ April 30, 2024
Wichita native and lifelong resident Grant Rogers Cox left this world to meet Jesus on April 30, 2024, at the age of 41. Grant’s life here on Earth was a vibrant fireworks display of love, laughter, big bear hugs and even bigger blue eyes.
Grant was the beloved only son of Linda R. Cox and Charles E. Cox and a loyal and legendary prankster to his older sisters, Michelle Cox (Jim Muehlberg) and Amy (Cox) Gunnerson. Grant loved his 11-year-old son, Theodore C. Cox, beyond measure and looked forward to their weekends watching movies, reading comics, eating bacon on anything possible and delivering dad jokes. Summer added their favorites: swimming, riding bikes and the pursuit of the best fireworks.
Grant was always willing to work hard. As a high school and tech school graduate, if there was a machine, he could operate it, whether it was a chainsaw or a street sweeper. He started out as a printer press operator and found his expertise for many years as a forklift operator and team leader.
Grant overcame homelessness and found his recovery and brothers for life at Oxford House, a sober living home. While there, he served as Comptroller and helped others find hope and housing. His victory there led to moving out on his own and securing both a home and car to be able to spend more time with his son. He continued to serve as an additional group leader for his Alcoholics Anonymous group. Grant was generous always, not just when it was easy. He didn’t look away. He would hand out his last dollar to a stranger if he thought they needed it more. He was a regular blood and plasma donor, believing that if he had something that could help someone else, he should give it.
To find his peace, Grant put many miles on his bike along the Arkansas River and to the Keeper of the Plains memorial, which became a particularly meaningful symbol in his life. He was not a keeper of finer things, but of his eloquent writing and photographs. His loving heart was as large and open as the Kansas plains. We will miss him greatly. He fought his battles honestly. We can only hope to continue his legacy of generosity, kindness and the power of a hug.
Grant’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11:00 am at Country Acres Baptist Church in Wichita, Kansas followed by lunch and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Oxford House, which promotes sober living. Their website is: centerofhopeinc.org and click the “donate online” button.
