David Russell Baker

David Russell Baker died on October 25, 2024 following a long illness. He was born on May 20, 1948 in Shelby, Michigan, and joined the United States Army in 1968. As part of the 23rd Squadron, he served as a helicopter pilot and crew chief during the Vietnam War, and among his many decorations, he earned the Purple Heart, 11 air medals, and an Army Commendation medal with V device. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, he married Kathy Joan Hoshor in 1975, and began his finance career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1986, he and his family moved to Wichita, where he worked at Beechcraft Corporation for many years and relished the world of aviation. He earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying the family on vacations throughout the region. Upon his retirement, he dedicated his considerable energy to investing, traveling, restoring cars, volunteering for environmental organizations and humanitarian causes, and spending time with his much-loved family, who adored him.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Baker of Wichita; daughter, Ashley Staats, son-in-law, Davin Staats, grandchildren, Charles Staats and Cecily Staats, of London, United Kingdom; brother, Bruce Baker (Joan Baker) of Austin, Texas; and sister, Janet Baker (David Gawlowski) of Farmington Hills, Michigan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024 at 10:00 am, at East Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita; the family will host visitors at a reception beginning at 9:30.
In lieu of flowers, the family has organized memorial funds with East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67218; and Wellesley College’s Department of History, 106 Central St., Wellesley, MA 02481.
