John H. Oltmanns, 92, retired Boeing Aerospace Engineer, died Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Rosary will be at 10:00 am, Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am, both on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
John was born on February 1, 1933 in Pilger, Nebraska. In late 1933, the family relocated to Moundridge, Kansas where he attended the local schools and graduated from Moundridge High School in 1950. In 1951 he was employed by the ATSF Railroad working on a bridge gang. His travels would take him to many local towns in north central Kansas. In 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Korea until returning to Kansas in early 1955. He returned to his job with the bridge gang until late 1956.
John married Patrosinia Martinez on November 10, 1956 in Little River, Kansas. A few days after their wedding they moved to Inglewood, California. John began work for North American Aviation as a carpenter while attending The Northrup Institute in pursuit of an aeronautical engineering degree. In 1960, the growing family relocated to San Luis Obispo, California where John completed his education and graduated from California Polytechnic State University in 1962.
With a new diploma in hand, the family relocated to Wichita where John began his long career in the field of aviation. He eventually retired from The Boeing Company in 1995.
John and Pat enjoyed traveling yearly to family reunions in Nebraska as well as the yearly 8221st Army reunions. His favorite pastime was working out in his garage on his 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe or just visiting with new and old friends at many local car shows and gatherings. Together, they put ninety thousand miles on the old Ford traveling to both coasts and many other destinations in between. No matter where he went, he could strike up a conversation with anyone.
In his later years, he enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and later, his great grandchildren who all enjoyed his wit and sense of humor. His legacy will live on in the stories that they will share as well as his love of cherry pie, ice cream and cookies!

Dear Pat, Jerry and other family members of John,
We were terribly saddened to hear of the loss of John. He was a wonderful friend to my parents, Bill and the late Yoshie Sagerty. He was a wonderful friend to us kids as well. There are many memories shared by my parents and his friends. His friendship of doing anything for his friends are fondly remembered. There were many visits out to lunch, B&C come to mind. Many visits at both our homes. Much support from Pat and John during mother’s stroke and visits to the home. Working on cars together. Sharing stories of their travels up and down the highway to classic car shows. His jokes and laughter were a lot of fun as well. His faith to God was huge and he shared this with us. Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May God comfort you all in his arms and the days ahead.
Our love and deepest condolences,
Bill Sagerty, Dr. Shirley Sagerty, Steve and Sandra Sagerty-Crenshaw, Carol, Joseph and Anna Bubnick
My Condolences…sincere, but equivalent to putting a bandaid on a bullet hole.
May the Lord shine his light upon you and give you peace. Until you meet again.
