Cathleen “Cathy” McMullen, 80, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney Charles and Cathleen “Kay” Young, and her sister, Patricia Vonfeldt.

She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Bruce McMullen; her stepchildren, Susan McMullen and Brian McMullen; her children, Julie (Jay) Cailteux of Wichita, Kansas, and their daughters, Emma Cailteux of Savannah, Georgia, and Kate Cailteux of Wichita, Kansas; Robert Canova of Wichita, Kansas, and his sons, Case Canova and Nick Canova, both of Overland Park, Kansas; Lori (Chuck) Patterson of Leawood, Kansas, and their daughters, Audrey, Natalie, and Emily Patterson; and Beau (Vanessa) Canova of Wichita, Kansas, and their son, Harlan Canova.

Cathy attended Blessed Sacrament School before graduating from St. Mary’s Cathedral High School in 1964. She went on to graduate from the three-year nursing program at St. Francis School of Nursing in 1967 and later earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a master’s degree in Adult Learning and Leadership from Kansas State University.

Cathy dedicated nearly four decades of her life to the nursing profession. She began her career at St. Francis Hospital as a labor and delivery nurse before serving as House Supervisor and later working in the Cardiac Care Intensive Unit. She continued her nursing career at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita. Although she was an exceptional nurse who compassionately cared for countless patients, Cathy possessed the heart of a teacher. She found tremendous joy in mentoring future generations of nurses, serving for many years as an instructor in the Nursing Program at Butler Community College. Prior to her retirement, she served as Director of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Program at Wichita Area Technical College (now WSU Tech), where her passion for educating future nurses continued. Cathy was always teaching and laughing, sharing her knowledge, encouraging others, and helping people become the very best versions of themselves. Her warmth, genuine interest in others, and infectious smile made her a natural mentor and friend. She truly never met a stranger; with her warm smile, quick wit, and sincere interest in others, she had a gift for making everyone feel like an old friend. She had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from every walk of life, and many who met her only once felt as though they had known her for years. Whether in a hospital hallway, a classroom, church, on the tennis court, or while traveling, Cathy made friends wherever she went.

Cathy was deeply devoted to her profession, and her greatest joy was always her family. Nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her children and grandchildren, whose accomplishments and lives filled her with pride. Her faith in God was the foundation of her life and quietly guided the compassion, generosity, and servant’s heart she shared with everyone she met.

Cathy also had an ornery sense of humor and a playful spirit that made life fun. She had a special gift for turning ordinary situations into adventures, finding humor and joy in everyday experiences, and making those around her smile. Whether she was meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with an old friend, Cathy had a remarkable way of making people feel valued, welcomed, and at ease. Together, she and Bruce traveled throughout the United States and Europe, creating treasured memories—and often new friendships—everywhere they went. She was endlessly curious, always eager to learn about new places, explore historic areas, and experience life to its fullest.

Cathy loved being actively involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. They were the center of her world, and she treasured every opportunity to be with them, celebrate them, and create lasting memories together.

Cathy also enjoyed playing tennis, working in her yard and garden, playing Bridge, singing in the Glee Club, and cooking for family and friends. She loved everything about nature and had a continuously growing interest in wildlife and birds.

She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her giving nature, her playful sense of humor, and her remarkable ability to make everyone around her feel genuinely seen, welcomed, and loved. Her legacy lives on in her family, in the countless nurses she mentored, and in the many lives she touched through her kindness, wisdom, friendship, and example. She will be dearly missed, forever loved, and gratefully remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
