Sharon Mortimer was born November 25, 1945, in Argonia, KS, to Hie Jr. Schon and Edith Schon. Sharon died July 13, 2026, in Wichita, KS.
Sharon graduated from Argonia High School with the Class of 1963 and remained close to her classmates throughout her life. After high school, she attended cosmetology school. Richard Pettegrew and Sharon were married February 8, 1964, in Argonia, KS. They settled in Argonia, and she began her career as a hair stylist. Soon, the military called Richard to duty, and they moved to Austin, TX. It was there that their son, Todd Pettegrew, joined the family in 1969. Sharon was a devoted mother and provided dedicated support to Todd.
Sharon worked as a hair stylist for 20 years. She received a Certificate in Drapery Design from Butler County Community College. Over the years she sold window treatments for Penney’s, appliances at Sears and retired from the jewelry department at Walmart. Along the way, Sharon made lifelong friends during her working years.
Sharon married Jr. Mortimer on September 15, 1989. They enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, sometimes playing the entire weekend. They took exciting road trips with the T-Bird Car Club.
Sharon loved setting a beautiful table and preparing food for tea parties that her family and friends enjoyed. She took pleasure in sending cards to family and friends with handwritten notes of encouragement, congratulations, or advice. Sharon looked forward to lunches with the “cousins” where family stories and secrets were shared causing lots of laughter. The last couple of years she lived in Ascension Living at McLean and made friends. She zipped around in her electric wheelchair delivering notes and joy to her friends.
Sharon was known for her positive outlook on life and was always up for a fun time. She filled her life, and the lives of others, with joy and laughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jerry Schon. Sharon is survived by her son, Todd; her brother, Rick Schon (Virginia); and many nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held later.
Arranged through Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
