Alvena Mary Spies

Alvena Mary (Kerschen) Spies, passed away after a fall on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, a few hours before her 97th birthday. Rosary will be at 9:00 A.M., Monday, September 12, 2016; Funeral Mass will follow at 9:30 A.M., all at St. Elizabeth Chapel at Catholic Care Center. Alvena was born September 8, 1919, in Fowler, KS. Receiving a rare scholarship to attend Fort Hays College, she met her future husband, Albert Spies, who preceded her in death. Alvena was a loving mother, librarian, and teacher. She never lost her inquisitive mind or love of art, poetry, and history. Survived by her sons, Albert L. Spies of Mayview, MO, Don Spies of Wichita, KS, Robert Spies of Vancouver, WA; daughters, Lynn Bebout of Wichita, KS, Nancy Spies of Atlanta, GA, Kathryn Riley of Wichita, KS; sisters, Eva Jo Barnes of Philadelphia, PA, Marguerite Sherman of Wichita, KS; brother, Robert Kerschen of Albuquerque, NM; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial has been established with Trees for Life, 3006 W. St. Louis, Wichita, KS 67203. Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.
