Ana M. Nelson

It is with great sadness that the family of Ana M. Nelson announces her peaceful passing on October 20, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born on April 17, 1938, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Diego E. and Casimira Ramos.  Ana came to Wichita, Kansas after she graduated high school to attend Sacred Heart College, which is now Newman University.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and earned a Master’s of Science in Education.  Ana taught elementary Spanish in the Wichita public school system for 15 years.

On January 20, 1962, Ana married Richard Nelson at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.  After she retired from teaching, Ana focused on being a homemaker and raising her two children, Frances and Michael.  Ana enjoyed spending time caring for her grandchildren and attending their various sporting events.  Ana’s hobbies included crochet and knitting, and she was a member of several crochet clubs.  Ana was a devout fan of college basketball and Dancing with the Stars.

Ana is preceded in death by her parents, Diego and Casimira; and son, Anthony Nelson.  She is survived by her husband, Richard O. Nelson; daughter, Frances (David) Hampton of Mt. Juliet, TN; son, Michael (Tracy) Nelson of Wichita, KS; and grandchildren, Erica Hampton, James Hampton, Anthony Hampton, Grace Nelson, and Abbey Ward.

A rosary will be at 10:00 a.m. on October 28, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 645 North 119th Street West, Wichita, Kansas 57235, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m., with interment to follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 1806 North Oliver Street, Wichita, Kansas 67208, at 12:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established with Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, 8101 West Central, Wichita, Kansas 67212.  Services in the care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary – West Chapel.
