Anne Allen, 94, Retired USD 259 Music Teacher, died Wednesday, September 8, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Edna Y. Harp; daughter, Sandra Lyon. Survived by her son, Marc Allen of Wichita; daughters, Susan Allen of Dallas, TX, Catherine Consiglio of Wichita; grandchildren, Christian Parker, David, Jonathan, and Joseph Consiglio. A memorial has been established with: Chamber Music at The Barn, 4055 N. Tyler Rd., Maize, KS 67101. Anne Allen was a wonderful musician, composer and music educator. She was born in Enid, Oklahoma and was proud of being an ‘Okie’. Anne started playing piano around the age of four when she was taught to ‘chord’ for her Uncle Guy Young. Uncle Guy rebuilt pianos in Hutchinson, Kansas for a living, so there were dozens in his workshop. Soon after, Anne, or Annie as her Mom called her, began playing for Revivals and working for churches in Oklahoma. She was in middle school and high school and already in demand as a musician. She also played jazz on Oklahoma radio stations as a teenager. Anne was comfortable playing in almost any genre. In 1961 Anne was a single mother with four children ages 4, 7, 9 and 11. She already had two degrees from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma but she needed to get her certification to be able to teach in the Wichita Public schools. She did that and eventually received her MM in Music Education and Composition from WSU. She worked for USD 259 for decades, with most of her time spent as the Choral Director at Robinson Junior High and East High School. While at East High School Anne raised approximately $22,000 to have the Austin Pipe Organ in the auditorium completely refurbished. Anne also started a long-standing tradition at East of a yearly variety show called ‘Stars for a Night’. She raised the money to have the show performed at Century II so students would understand the experience of working on a stage with professional stagehands and strict rehearsal schedules. Anne was a gifted arranger and composer and made hundreds of arrangements for her choirs, madrigals, and church groups. Anne worked closely with the Music Education area at WSU and helped to educate and guide many young choral students during their student teaching assignments with her. Anne played for many churches in Wichita for over fifty years. Among those churches are Fairview Christian, Broadway Christian Church, University Methodist, Plymouth Congregational, Pilgrim Congregational, Hillside Christian, St. James Episcopal, and Good Shephard Episcopal. Anne also worked for over forty years for Downing and Lahey Mortuary in Wichita. She always said she would write a book entitled “I’ve married them and buried them.” Anne worked for many years for Johnson Music Center (Hutchinson) where she helped sell, demonstrate, and dedicate organs all over the Midwest. She also played at the Kansas State Fair (under the grandstand) for years, traveling each day after school from Wichita, to sit and play the organ for many hours during the evenings of the fair and all day on the weekends. Anne also had a regional reputation of playing for horse shows at the large arenas in Kansas. Anne was a longtime supporter of the Wichita Symphony, Music Theatre of Wichita and a Board Member for Chamber Music at The Barn. She loved classical music. The Messiah was one of her most cherished pieces to listen to, teach and perform. She taught it to many of her choirs and students. Her all-time favorite composer was Johannes Brahms. Her most favorite symphony, without a doubt, was Brahms 1st, with the last movement being the epitome of everything she loved. Anne believed in the awe and power of nature and often sought the healing and peace to be found there. As a passionate, gifted musician and teacher she touched thousands of people’s lives. Multiple recordings Anne made on piano and organ will be uploaded to YouTube in the coming weeks. Anne’s family is also having additional CD’s made of her recordings of Hymns, Gospel and Christmas compilations that will be available for purchase. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

  1. There are no words how much Anne inspired me with her passion for music. She was my greatest support in guiding me -and I wish I could apologize for all of the basement piano lessons I took with her as she tried to make my fingers be more. I, along with everyone in my classes at Robinson will never forget her pounding on the top of the piano and saying “You are better than this” – and then leaving the room to leave us with so much thinking to process. What we came up with – #1 Yes, we were better than this. #2.We were being #@!% and she called us on it. #3. We just want her to come back and prove to her she was right – and boy did we try. Love you Ms. Allen – thank you for being there for me and for all that you mentored and spread the love of music to many.

  2. I had the privilege of singing in the choirs at Pilgrim and Plymouth Congregational churches with Anne as director. Her love of music radiated in all of us. Dianne Adams

  3. I am one of the thousands but Anne Allen was one of a special few in my mind and heart. In addition to being my choral music teacher at Robinson Jr High, she was my piano teacher and first voice teacher. She gave sound advice on how to treat my voice that I have followed for five decades now. Over the years I would end up singing for a wedding or funeral that she was playing and it always felt like a reunion. I’ve always loved her and always will. Much love to her family.

  4. Anne was a wonderful mentor to so many of us majoring in music education at WSU. She welcomed students from Jim Hardy’s class to observe her teaching especially at the junior high level. It was a tremendous gift. We thank your family for sharing her with us. Billie E. Hegge-DuVal

  5. Dear Catherine, I am so sorry to learn of the death of your mother. Anne and I often did music together, but it was some time ago. Please know that you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Betty Partridge

  6. Mrs Allen was my vocal music teacher at both Robinson and later at East High in Wichita. What a fantastic instructor. Always dynamic in encouraging us to give it our all! Her selections for our performances always spoke to me however the greatest was always Handel’s Messiah. Her talent and enthusiasm for kids was so apparent always, she is always remembered with fondness.- Louise Wilson Morris

  7. My name is Michael Barrett and Mrs. Allen was my choir teacher for all three of my years at East High, she was by far my favorite teacher. I probably wasn’t her best student, but I did learn a lot from her. How to stand on stage without fidgeting, how to turn the pages of your music at the proper times AND quietly. But most of all, my love for ALL music. The pieces she had us do spanned all genres and gave our young minds the ability to appreciate everything that had to do with music, not just vocal. I still think about her quite often. Sending comforting thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. Rest In Peace Mrs. Allen😔

  8. Mrs. Allen was my Madrigals and Choir teacher for my years at East High. Her restoration fund raising for the pipe organ at our school and 1st Stars for a Night at Century II happened during my time there. They restored the organ the year after I graduated, I think. We sang the Messiah every year and I left East with a long for it. I was an alto; can still remember my part when I hear pieces of the Messiah played around the Christmas season. She was such a kind loving, and engaged teacher and she was my favorite. She once took me and my classmate, Kirsten Hadix, over to her “cabin” in Burns for the day… cannot remember why. It was a lovely Saturday and it was a great opportunity to get to know her as a person not only a teacher. But on the way back we saw some cows in a pasture laying down. She said, “when the cows are laying down it’s a good day to fish.” I always remember that when I see cows laying down in a pasture. She was such a good choral instructor she kind of ruined me for any other choirs and directors. When you’ve been taught be the best it’s difficult to go backwards. ❤️ Loved her.

  9. Mrs. Allen was one of the most influential teachers I’ve ever had; she not only really knew her subject, but she was inspiring, motivating, encouraging, and supportive. She truly gave her students roots and wings. I followed in her footsteps and became a professional musician and teacher. About 90% of what I know about performing and teaching came from the two years she was my teacher and friend. She was so very talented and skilled! She would write arrangements at her desk, never having to check them at the piano. Her groups performed pieces that were still on the radio, long before the “official” sheet music was available. Many performance opportunities taught us much more about ourselves than the music, but we were a show choir before anybody had heard of that. Her knowledge and love of so many genres instilled the same in her students. “Messiah” is still a favorite! Mrs. Allen was funny, cool, ornery, patient, passionate, compassionate, and a devoted mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the many lives she impacted. My most sincere condolences to the family of which she was so proud. Kirsten (Hadix) Kuroyva, East High class of ’82

  10. Miss. Anne Allen, Was part of a Dynamic Duo, the other being Mr. Bob Gleason, Those Two Made the Music Department at East High years 79-82 very Memorable!!! Rest In Heavenly Peace Miss. Anne Allen!!!

  11. If not for Anne Allen, I would not listen to Messiah at Symphony Hall in Boston every November, nor enjoy such wonderful evenings listening to the Handel & Haydn Society play there, nor read music and take a stab at the piano, nor love so many classical pieces. She was my teacher for two years at Robinson and she ignited all that. I’ll be playing Brahms in her memory tonight, and saying, “Bravo!” to a life so well lived.

  12. Anne was my piano teacher and musician at my church growing up. She is a special woman in my life story. Remembering Anne with gratitude. Rebecca Bunton

  13. Anne Allen was so talented as our organist at St. James. I have good memories of her during Vacation Bible School when my son was very young. She was so good with the children.
