Bettie Maurine (Moore) Thompson
went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2020 in Wichita, KS. She was born January 13, 1934 in Jonesboro, Louisiana. She was the only daughter and third child of "Buddy" and "Lizzie" Moore. She grew up in Jonesboro, where she attended elementary and high schools. While in high school, she was the editor of the Jonesboro-Hodge High School yearbook and was elected "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Most Intelligent Senior." Bettie graduated Cum Laude from Louisiana Tech University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics Education. Bettie met Glenn Thompson in a freshman algebra class at Tech. They were married three years later, on August 21, 1955. After her graduation from Tech, she began teaching mathematics at a nearby high school, while Glenn finished his senior year. During their marriage, Bettie taught junior high and high school mathematics at Quitman, LA, Fairborn, OH, and Wichita, KS, for a total of sixteen years. Bettie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in Jonesboro while a youth. In Wichita, she and Glenn were members of Sharon Baptist Church for many years, where she worked with preschoolers. In January 1993, Bettie and Glenn joined Central Christian Church and, after several years, became charter members of the Encouragers Class. Bettie's first love was her family. She loved socials with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed genealogy and created an extensive family tree of her ancestors. Bettie was preceded in death by her father, Cleveland "Buddy" Lafayette Moore; her mother, Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Gilbert) Moore; and her two brothers, James Martin Moore and Harold Ray Moore. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Oliver Thompson; three children, Kathryn Maurine Bragg (Robert), Diane Linne' Kriwiel (Michael), and Daniel Glenn Thompson (Mattie). In addition, she is survived by 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Private Family Service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be sent to the Encouragers Class at Central Christian Church, 2900 N. Rock Rd., Wichita, KS 67226. Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.
What a sweet, special friendship you shared with me, Miss Bettie! I will remember always the treks down the Larksfield hallways, picking out just the right pencil color during our coloring sessions at the table and, of course, figuring out “who dun it” before the end of the Perry Mason tv shows we watched together. Thank you for the joy you poured into my heart from yours. It is a gift I treasure every day! Tammy K.
We miss Bettie and her beautiful smile. She made us feel blessed when we visited & had such a loving way about her. She is with Jesus now, PTL!
Bettie was always smiling, encouraging, and a wealth of information from “how to discipline your child” to “how do I get my child to stay in her bed and go to sleep”! A beautiful person! A wonderful mother. A perfect compliment to Glenn. Thank you, Bertie!
I am so very sorry Glenn but rejoice she lives in heaven. What a treasure trove of memories from your days here in Topeka and the work you both did so well. Will miss my friend. Jan Powell
I missed out in 1974 taking Algebra from this dear lady. My brother was her student and Jardine Junior High School. I remember as a kid, many get-togethers with Glenn and Bettie with my folks Dave and Ann–dominoes, dancing (dont tell the preacher) and lots of food. Seems like BBQ brisket was one of her specialties. She teamed up with my mom in the choir loft every Sunday keeping me, Danny and Bart in line with eye darts when we acted up. Always a wonderful Christian. I’ll see you soon.
What a gracious wonderful woman who was our neighbor for 30 years. Cathie and I will always have etched in our memories the pie and coffee on her veranda. Condolences to Glenn and the family. Jim
I was blessed to know Bettie having met her as a young teenager when my dad became pastor of Sharon Baptist Church. The Thompsons opened their home to the youth group and I have fond memories of spending time at their house during those teenage years. She came to be a part of my extended family when my brother Rob married their daughter, Kathy. I loved sitting and listening to her stories when we would see her. One of the most genuine and sweetest ladies i have known.
Spencer’s Memaw became my Memaw too when I married him. She was such a sweet lady, always asking me about my family in Italy and making sure I felt welcomed! I will miss her dearly! ❤️
Bettie was a friend from Sharon Baptist and then in the Encouragers S.S . She always had a smile and encouraging word. She will be missed. Condolences to all the family.
Another star in heaven.
In times like these, I always think of the words of a poem I once read. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Know that We share with you in this time of grief and also in the love and memories of Bettie. although men’s words seem to bring little comfort in times like these, I have found comfort in the words of Jesus as he spoke in 1 Cor. 2:9 —- NO EYE HAS SEEN, NO EAR HAS HEARD, NO MIND HAS CONCEIVED WHAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM. I am sure Bettie is now knee deep in Joy, Wonder and Worship.
What a kind and encouraging lady, Bettie was! We were blessed to have them as our Sunday School teachers when we first moved to Wichita and Sharon Baptist Church. They helped us not to just grow in our faith but in our marriage as well. Such a wonderful loving couple. Praying for you and your family, Glenn.
She was a beautiful woman and a fantastic teacher.
I pray the love of God enfolds you during your journey through grief.
Our Aunt Bettie was such a wonderful lady. She was my Dad’s little sister. I so fondly remember when she and her family returned to her mother’s house in Louisiana each summer and we got to visit with them. We slept on the back porch to stay cool and Aunt Bettie only had to fuss at us kids a few times 😉 When my parents’ health was failing several years ago, Aunt Bettie and Uncle Glenn visited several times. It was a long journey for them, but they came anyway. I’ll always be grateful. Our sincere condolences to Glenn, Kathi, Diane, Daniel and all her family.
I just saw this obit on facebook. Bettie was my last Sunday School teacher at Sharon BC before I married – and I just celebrated my 50th anniversary this year! I got such good advise and true Bible teaching from her. I know she heard “good and faithful servant” as she entered heaven. Condolences to Glenn and Thompson family. Kathy Roberts Gibbs
