Betty Jo Witherspoon

Betty Jo (Burney) Witherspoon, 91, retired Payroll Supervisor for Financial Operations at Wichita State University where she had been employed in the Business Office since 1946, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Visitation with the family, 2-4 p.m., Sunday, September 8, Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Memorial Service, 1 p.m., Monday, September 9, First Presbyterian Church. Betty was born January 27, 1922, in Sherman Texas, where she graduated from Sherman High School and was a member of the Honor Society. After graduation, Betty was employed by the Texas Telephone Company. In 1946, Betty married Albert L. Witherspoon of Wichita, Kansas, and they were married for 56 years. He preceded her in death. Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a volunteer at the churchs thrift store, Economy Corner. Betty also helped her husband, Al, the church archivist, by transcribing the hand written diary of Robert Lawrence, an early church leader. After retirement, Betty enjoyed gardening, quilting and traveling. Her survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Rollin Kirk Witherspoon and Susan Lee of LaCanada, CA; daughter, Cynthia Kay Witherspoon of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Evan Lee and Ryan Ross Witherspoon and niece, Myrlin Withrow of Rapid City, SD. A memorial has been established with First Presbyterian Church Archives Fund, 525 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214.
