Betty L. Murray

Betty L Murray., a resident of Wichita since 1967, died March 1, 2013 at The Cheney Golden Age Home. Betty was born December 2, 1931 in Okemah, OK, to William G. and Zelda M. Hamby. She was raised in Oklahoma City, and she married Garrison R. Murray on April 15, 1954. Betty received a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Music from Central State Teachers College, Edmond, OK, in 1954. She continued her education at Wichita State University, from which she received her Masters in Special Education. Betty was an elementary school classroom teacher and vocal music teacher from 1954 to 1967. She then began teaching special needs children until her retirement in 1992. Betty enjoyed playing piano, singing, painting, sewing, traveling, working with Special Olympics, and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Garrison R. Murray; brother, W.G. Hamby Jr. (Mary); daughters, Laury Bullock (Keith), Garrie K. Murray, Janet Murray (David), and grandson, Jessie Bullock (Kristen). A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 22, 2013, at Downing and Lahey West, 10515 W. Maple, Wichita, KS.
