Betty Martin, age 84, passed away in Wichita, Kansas on May 31, 2020. She was born Betty Jane Perry in Milo, ME on March 19, 1936 to Rodney and Ethel Perry. As often happens in Maine in March, there was a terrible snowstorm and they couldn’t get to the hospital. As the story goes, she was born at home on the kitchen table. She was the youngest and last of their children. Betty and her sister Charlene were close enough in age that they went to school together in Milo. She went to college in Bangor, Maine and worked there at Creditors Credit and Collection Service. She married Wesley Martin in 1956 at the Methodist church in Milo. They met when she was working in Bangor and he was stationed there at Dow Air Force Base. She traveled with him when he was stationed in Topeka, Kansas, Tucson, Arizona, and Wichita, Kansas. In Wichita, Betty worked part-time at a clothing store, a post office sub-station, and at TG&Y. Her favorite job was taking care of her grandson, John, from the time he was born until he was through elementary school. Betty loved her family, her caramel lattes, chocolate covered cashews, and the slot machine (though you wouldn’t know it by the way she grumbled at the machines when she wasn’t winning). And she loved her cat Doufus. He always got fed before she did in the morning and slept on the bed or on the couch wherever he wanted and she would move accordingly. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three siblings: sisters, Frances Chamberlin and Charlene Pender, and brother, Rodney Perry, Jr. Survivors include daughter, Norma; son-in-law, Carl Farnsworth; grandson, John, all of Wichita. Betty was a two-time cancer survivor and donations can be sent to the cancer society of your choice.

  1. Betty was like a second Mom to me. I will truly miss her. She loved our gambling trips with me, Norma, and my Mom. Betty and Mom had a great time visiting and taking care of each other. I am sure Betty and Mom are having a great reunion now centered around Charlie Pride. Rest In Peace Betty. Norma, my thoughts and love are with you during this difficult time.
