Carl Galler

Galler, Carl, 96, owner of Gaylors and the jewelry department at the Giant Store, died Sunday, March 15, 2015. Funeral Service will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Carl was born to Ethel and Morris Galler in Kansas City, MO on November 27, 1918. At the start of his career, Carl was the manager at Best Jewelry Store in Kansas City. He was an outgoing Captain in the United States Air Force during WWII, serving 2.5 years in China in the Flying Tigers under General Chenolt. He attended many Flying Tigers reunions in the following years. Carl enjoyed playing tennis and dancing with his wife, Sylvia, whom he married in Kansas City on June 8, 1947. They then moved to Wichita in 1950 where he bought Gaylors Jewelry and had his first baby. He then bought the jewelry department at the Giant Store with Melvin Saffier. He and Sylvia were frequent cruisers on Holland America. He was appointed to the Board of Mental Health for Sedgwick County where he served 27 years. He was also appointed to the Board of Wesley Friends for several years and the Sedgwick County Appraisal Board for 2 years. Preceded in death by his son, Gary Galler; brother, Ronnie. Survived by the love of his life, Sylvia; son, Keith Galler of Parsons, KS; grandsons, Joshua (Laura), Hayden (Sara); great-grandsons, Owen, Daniel, Lawrence; daughter-in-law, Debbie of Overland Park, KS; loving nieces and nephews, Joyce (Harold) Koch of Leawood, KS, Doreen (Ariel) Leibovitz of Houston, TX, Sheldon Levine, Marilyn (Cal) Lemmon of San Antonio, TX; sisters-in-law, Charlotte, Idell Goldstein. A memorial has been established with Hebrew Congregation, 1850 N. Woodlawn, Wichita, KS 67208.
