Carolyn S. Bice, 77, retired administrative assistant at United Way of the Plains, died on June 13, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. She was born Sept. 29, 1941, in Sedan, KS, the daughter of Lola I. and John A. Maddox. Carolyn graduated from St. John High School, St. John, KS in 1959. She attended the University of Kansas and graduated from Fort Hays State Univ. with a bachelor’s degree in education and foreign languages. She taught Spanish and German for 2 years in Oakley, KS and was a substitute teacher in Beloit, KS for many years. Carolyn was also a devoted mother of her three children for over 20 years and a loving grandmother, who was actively involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She was an avid fan of Kansas Jayhawks basketball. Carolyn married Carl M. Bice, Jr. on Dec. 22, 1960, in St. John, KS. She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lola Maddox, and her husband, Carl M. Bice, Jr. She is survived by her son, Greg Bice; daughters Karen Swendson and Marsha Fisher; sister, Phyllis Kay Glover; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services, 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 18 at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West in Wichita. Graveside service, 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 19 in Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way of the Plains, 245 N. Water, Wichita, KS 67202.
