Perel, Catherine Susan, 43, student of life, died Thursday, July 16, 2009. Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Catherine was preceded in death by her grandparents, two aunts and her service dog Levi. She is survived by her father and step-mother, William and Tula Perel, of Pawnee, OK; mother and step-father, Eugenie Perel and Phillip Brazil, of Wichita; sisters and families, Elizabeth and husband Dwayne Deckard, their children, James and Rachel, Shirley and husband Tod King, their children, Charles and Samantha, all of Wichita. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Ahavath Achim Hebrew Congregation, 1850 North Woodlawn, Wichita, Kansas, 67208, and Kansas Speciality Dog Services, P.O. Box 216, Washington, Kansas, 66968.

I was deeply saddened to read of Kathys passing. I remember her so well as the bright, inquisitive, outspoken yet respectful student who added so much ‘classroom seasoning’ to the one course in genetics she took with me decades ago. Considering the very different hands each of us is dealt by chance in this life, one must truly admire the courageous and insistently determined way she played out hers.
