Newsom, Charles L., 83, entered eternal life on August 3, 2009. Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. He was born April 26, 1926 to Odia E. Annie Newsom. Mr. Newsom was raised in rural western Kansas. He joined the Army and served in WWII in the European conflict. He married Rachel Cummings on January 13, 1963. Charles worked for the Board of Education as a custodial supervisor until his retirement in 1988. Charles Rachel enjoyed traveling to south Texas for winters and Colorado for summers in their travel trailer. He was a member of the Air Con Campers where he was wagon master. Charles enjoyed hunting fishing with his family friends. He was a generous and caring husband, father, friend and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas, Doyn, and Alexander Newsom. Charles is survived by his wife, Rachel, of the home; sons, Mike (Diana) Newsom, of Augusta, David (Ellen) Newsom, of Sedgwick; daughter, Anna (James) Poeverlein, of Toronto, KS; sister, Joy Cudney, of Trousdale, KS; grandchildren, Chelsey Money, Daniel Nicholas Newsom, Shane Caleb Newsom, Dena, Jaims, Jessica, Marcus Tucker; great-granddaughter, Sarah Tucker. www.dlwichita.com

  1. Chuck has been a wonderful neighbor, always lending a hand to anyone who needed help. Brianne and I will always be grateful for his help and friendship. He and Rachael took a special interest in my daughter and our horses. He will be greatly missed. We pray that God will help you and your family in this time of grief.

I want to say Uncle chuck was a Great Communicator and teacher of cleaning procedures I still miss him, even tho he retired in 1988 , I didnt know I married into the family until charles told me , You married my niece (Mary Cummings) at one of our custodial inservices , He was a person who enjoyed talking and being around people.   3. Back in 1967 when I was in high school I got my first job cleaning Sunnyside Elementary School after the kids went home for the day. Charlie was one of my supervisors and I had a great deal of respect for him. He knew how to inspire people and treated everyone fairly. I don’t think back enough of the folks who, while I was growing up, instilled those basic values that remain with me today. Thank you Charlie, rest in peace.
