Charles N. Thorpe

Thorpe, Charles N., 86, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010. Service 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 31, Andover United Methodist Church. Charles was born in Hamburg, Iowa on December 30, 1923, the only child of Nathan G. and Eva V. Thorpe. The family moved to Sterling, Colorado in 1926. Charles graduated from Sterling High School in 1941. He was a pharmacist mate in the Navy during World War II and served as an operating room assistant to the surgeons at the Naval Hospital on Maui during his time in the service. He married Margaret E. Rice on December 29, 1946. He attended the University of Denver, graduating from there in 1950. His career in Farm Credit started as a manager of the National Farm Loan Association in Sterling, Colorado. He later worked at the Production Credit Association in Sterling and was manager of the Production Credit Association in Colby, Kansas for five years before going to work at the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank in Wichita. He retired from the FICB as Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer in 1986. Preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Linda. Survived by his wife, Margaret, sons, Dick Thorpe and his wife, Glenda of Columbia, South Carolina, Dean Thorpe and his wife, Julie of Wichita, Kansas, daughters, Pamela Thorpe of Andover, Kansas, Peggy Ruhl and her husband, John of Leon, Kansas, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. So sorry to hear of your loss. Charlie was an exceptional man. He hired me in 1979 when he was the sr VP of FICB. I thoroughly enjoyed working for Charlie for about 8 years. He made it the best job I ever had.
