Claude E. Arnold, II, (Rocky), 72, of Wichita, KS, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2023 at home with his family lovingly by his side.
Rocky was born on March 28, 1951 in Wichita to Nelda and Claude Arnold. After graduation from Wichita North High School, Rocky joined the U.S. Army to serve his country which took him around the world to Germany, Italy, Hawaii and Texas. He received multiple commendation medals, awards, and recognition, and he was proud to be a Drill Instructor, mentoring young Soldiers. Upon retirement as a Command Sergeant Major, Rocky continued to serve his country via a new career as a JROTC Instructor in Wichita; Kansas City, MO; Mustang, OK; and Guthrie, OK. After 20 years of civilian service there he retired and settled back in Wichita with his wife Lynn for the remainder of his life.
He bestowed great life lessons upon his kids prompting them to make up their beds each day and keep to a schedule. He was often heard reminding them “if you’re five minutes early, you’re ten minutes late.” All who knew Rocky, knew him as a good and true friend. He was a dog lover and his canine companions were dearest to him. Lexi, Sophie, Abby, and Winston have stayed behind, but Holly, Maggie, Cassie, Malcolm, Sadie, Missy and Cinder are now at his feet receiving treats for eternity. He also loved his weekly bingo games and was fondly referred to as “Bud Light Rocky” by his bingo buddies who appreciated his strong will and ferocious competitiveness.
Rocky is survived by his wife Lynn, and his five children Nathaniel Arnold (Denise), Brandi Lazzelle (Sean), Erin Baxendale (Jason), Laura Burton (Chris), Justin Enders (Laura), nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his brothers William Arnold, Terry Arnold, and sister Sue Arnold. He was preceded in death by his parents Nelda and Claude.
A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on June 27 and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on June 28, both at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Wichita. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside St., Wichita. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.

  2. I knew Claude when he was at North High, working for my parents at the Dairy Queen on North Broadway. Never would imagined he would become a Command Sargent Major! My father in law was one, served in 3 wars. I know the dedication it takes. I am sorry for your loss, but know my memories of Claude are good, if not entertaining. Blessings to his family.

  7. Rocky was one of the most kind and loving person I knew. He loved his family and will truly be missed. My memories of him are around a pool table or in the camper with Lynn and their 4 legged babies running around! May he rest in peace and his family know that he is looking down watching after them all. Love Dinah

  8. Sgt Major was amazing. He taught me so many life lessons I will never forget. RIP Sgt Major!
