“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Darlene Gallegos Saker was born in Gardner, Colorado to Monico and Eleanor Gallegos. She lived most of her life in Wichita, Kansas where she peacefully passed on Thursday, November 4, 2021, after 74 wonderful years. She spent many years working as a gifted administrative assistant for Koch Industries, Thorn Americas, and Intrust Bank. She frequently donated blood and was an active volunteer and member of Kechi United Methodist Church. Darlene had a never-ending smile. She was a loving wife, mother, Gma, Great Gma, sister, and friend to everyone she met. She had many loves in life including golf, watching sporting events, and hiking and fishing in the mountains. She loved nature and all of God’s creatures. She also enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends, working puzzles, listening and dancing to music, shopping, and most of all making everyone laugh. Darlene always saw and brought out the best in everyone. She loved living life to the fullest, gave freely of everything she had, and never took things for granted. She is survived and celebrated by her loving husband, Larry; daughter, Kim (Ray); son, Doug (Nikki); sisters, Ilene (Keith) and Dorothy (Terry); and grandchildren, RJ (Katie), Peyton, Lauren, Danielle, and Tanner; and great-granddaughter, Olivia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Kechi United Methodist Church, 4533 E. 61st St. N., Kechi, KS 67067. Private services will be held and a Celebration of Life is being planned for early next year. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

  1. I am Gina Petruzzelli, daughter of Vito and Alice Petruzzelli. I was friends with Dorothy and her older sister, Darlene. We lived at 1111 Lulu St. in Wichita, next to the Gallegos’. They were all such a warm and loving family. We may have been 5 or 6 yr olds. Darlene would bury treasure in the dirt and then help us dig it up later. She also took us down the alley behind their house when new gravel was dropped, helping us the sparkling stones. My dad was in the Air Force so ge was transferred out. When we came back to Wichita, we visited the Gallegos’. Their dad had made a small cement castle next to their house. It was beautiful! If any of the family would like to contact me, do so at Gina.Brigner@gmail.com. Although late, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Gina (Petruzzelli) Brigner
