On Monday, February 6, 2023, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Darrel Steinshouer passed away. He was 81 years old. Born to Eldon and Hazel Steinshouer, he grew up in Hoxie, Kansas. Darrel graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in both Pharmacy and Law. He was the owner and operator of Ken-Mar Family Drugs for over 40 years. Darrel and his wife, Sylvia dedicated their time to family. They enjoyed traveling with their children and supporting and coaching their activities. They continued this with their 7 grandchildren. Darrel’s favorite thing to do was to attend as many of his kids’ and grandkids’ performances, concerts, dance recitals, sports, and activities as possible. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoyed hunting, bowling, and watching sports. He was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and the Wichita State Shockers. Darrel was known for being a man of few words who was loyal, kind, generous, and independent. Darrel is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sylvia (Herbert) Steinshouer; daughter, Heidi (Jay) Ogden; son, Jared Steinshouer (Mary Ontko); daughter, Chloe Steinshouer (Jeff Polson); and grandchildren, Ezra, Cole, Ruth, Maggie, Seth, Violet, and Jasper. Memorial Service will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Visitation will follow the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. It was an honor to have known him. I always enjoyed the chuckle I got out of him when I called him Dad, since I adopted myself into the Steinshouer family. Your family is amazing and I know he was very proud of you all. May your many memories together, especially those cherished family nights, help carry you thru this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

  2. We were grade schoolers. There was Darrel, Murray, Chuck, Dick, Larry and I am Rex. We thought the world was ours. There was bicycling, sleding on Pratts hill, marbles, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, sports, Saturday night movies and Cub Scouts. We were all for one and one for all. We grew older and eventually went our separate ways but that age of innocents that we shared have memories that are forever with us. Rest in peace my friend.

    • Follow. on to Rex’s post! What a crew we were! And fortunately is hasn’t stopped! Darrel and I went off to KU, pledged the same fraternity, shared an apartment and continued on. So many stories I can tell! A loss like this makes one aware of how important a role those old friends played in your life! Blue Skies and tail winds, My Friend!! Rest in peace!!

  3. Sylvia and Family, Thank you for all our Thursday mornings laughing and learning around your island. I will miss them more than you could ever imagine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
We love you, Sherry and JC

  4. Sylvia and Steinshouer Familly ~ My deepest sympathies go out to your amazing crew. Darrel was definitely a man of few words, but his love for his family, his sports and his quick wit and laugh won’t be forgotten. It was always entertaining to have him just come out of the blue with a zinger or a funny story. He was a brilliant soul with a great heart for knowledge and debate. Prayers being sent as you celebrate a life well lived and a man that will live on in our memories and our hearts.

  5. My condolences to Sylvia and Darrel’s family. Enjoyed visiting with Darrel at KU Pharmacy events in Wichita.
    Gene Hotchkiss

  6. To Sylvia and the whole Steinshouer family, my condolences to you in your loss. I only had a few times to visit with Darrel at our Wichita Hosta Society meetings through the years, everybody liked him! I wish blessings and peace to the family and friends Darrel left behind.

  7. Just when we might have had fun sharing memories he had to go and leave us! He was so much younger so he was just a little brat back then! Wish I was able to come down. I know he will really be missed. Irene Follis

  8. Sylvia: My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. My God’s love give you all peace. Anne St Clair

The Querner family is thinking of you all although it has been a very long time since I played soccer with Heidi (such a wonderful soccer player) while my father, Jon was still coaching us.
