David Edward Herrmann

Herrmann, David Edward. died on October 19, 2009 at Wesley Medical Center. Born on May 27, 1919 in Dubuque, Iowa to Bertha and Oscar Herrmann. He was the 5th of 8 children. His family owned the Herrmann Furniture Store in Dubuque, where he and all his siblings worked during their growing-up years. He graduated from Iowa State University in May, 1941 with a mechanical engineering degree and went to work for Sioux Tool in Sioux City, Iowa. While working there, he met his future wife, Carol Schneider, who was from Leeds, Iowa. Dave enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January, 1942 and attended Officer Training School, where he became a bombardier on a B-24 bomber. He was assigned to the South Pacific Theatre. On October 9, 1943, he married Carol in Tonopah, NV. Following the war, he returned to the states in 1945 and resumed employment with Sioux Tool in Sioux City where his two children, Thomas Coy and Anita Kay were born. The family moved to Wichita, KS in 1951, where Dave became an aeronautical engineer and worked for Lear Jet, Boeing, Cessna and Beech Aircraft. He retired from Beech in 1988. His beloved wife of 56 years, Carol, preceded him in death in January, 2000. Dave was a member of the Shrines band, playing the tuba for many years. He was also a member of East Heights Methodist Church for over 50 years. On June 27, 2001, he married local artist and long time friend, Bea Edgington of Wichita, Kansas. They had eight wonderful years together, where they were able to travel, play bridge, and enjoy their families. Dave is survived by his wife, Bea of Wichita and his two children, son, Thomas Coy Herrmann of Tulsa, Oklahoma and daughter, Anita Kay Campbell of Lee Summit, Missouri. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren: Jason and Brandi Herrmann of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Jana and Tyson Humble and great granddaughter, Claire Humble of St. Louis, Missouri; John and Erin Herrmann of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jeffrey and Amanda Herrmann of Eudora, Kansas; Bryan Campbell of McCarthy, Alaska; Daryn Campbell and great grandson, Nikhila Campbell of Tucson, Arizona; and Colin Campbell of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Hahn of Grand Island, Nebraska and Adele Feller of Dubuque, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Millie Herrmann of LaPorte, Texas; his brother-in-law, Bill Weber of Boulder, CO; and many nieces and nephews. Dave was a kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by family and friends In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Daves name to East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 East Douglas, Wichita, Kansas 67218. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23 at 1:30pm in the sanctuary at East Heights United Methodist Church. Downing Lahey Mortuary East is in charge of the arrangements.
